Did you know that more than 3.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder? And, since 2000, the prevalence of autism in U.S. children has increased by 119.4 percent, from 1 in 150 in 2000 to 1 in 68 in 2010. In fact, the CDC lists autism as the fastest-growing developmental disability.
As we approach Autism Awareness Month (April), we’re proud to announce our support for the Nassau/Suffolk Autism Society of America!
Each of our offices will be participating in this year’s puzzle piece heart campaign and starting TODAY, March 29, we will be accepting donations to help make a difference for individuals with autism!
During your next visit, donate a $1 (or more!) and sign your name in one of these puzzle piece hearts to hang in our office. We will match ALL donations 1:1 and even give an extra dollar for each NEW LIKE or FOLLOWER we receive on our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram)! All donations will go toward social and recreational events for individuals with autism on Long Island.
We are proud to be supporting such a phenomenal charity and truly believe that together we can make a difference!

While enjoyable, the laid back pace of summer can often disrupt normal routines. With the first day of school around the corner, it’s time to start to transition your children back into their school year schedules (including establishing good dental habits).
As you know, a twice-yearly checkup is your child’s best defense against poor oral health; but, there are some dental habits that can begin at home! See below for some tips to help your kids ‘make the grade’ for dental health:
As you know, a twice-yearly checkup is your child’s best defense against poor oral health; but, there are some dental habits that can begin at home! See below for some tips to help your kids ‘make the grade’ for dental health:
- Get your kids used to brushing 2 minutes, twice a day - purchase a brushing timer, or download a brushing app to use to encourage them to spend the full amount of time brushing their teeth!
- New school year, new toothbrushes! Be sure you swap the toothbrushes every three months to avoid buildup of germs and bacteria.
- Help your child’s nutrition by packing health lunches and replacing soft drinks and juices with water to keep their sugar consumption low.
- Get pending dental appointments, including fillings, out of the way before going back to school, to avoid missing class time during the school year. Schedule a visit with us today!

Have a Kid Friendly Super Bowl Party
The Broncos and Seahawks go head to head this Sunday for the Super Bowl - are you ready? A Super Bowl get together should be all sorts of fun for the whole family. That’s why we’ve put together some snacks and activities your younger guests can enjoy alongside the adults. See below for some ideas!
Super Bowl Snacks:
Who doesn’t love potato skins at a Super Bowl Party? This year try making them out of sweet potatoes - bonus, sweet potatoes are rich in Vitamin A, which helps strengthen tooth enamel and works to keep your teeth healthy! Get the recipe here »
Or keep it simple! Try some fruit skewers with honeyed yogurt dip. Just choose your favorite fruits and arrange them on a skewer, including a mixture of honey and plain yogurt for dipping. Bonus, the good bacteria in yogurt helps fight the bad ones in your mouth and some fruits, like pineapples and strawberries, work as natural teeth whiteners! Be sure to add them to your skewer, get the recipe here »
Super Bowl Activities:
Pre-game, have your kids make paper pom poms or signs to cheer on their favorite team. Gather some tissue paper and cut into small strips to look like streamers. Tape the strips to one end of a paper towel holder and vuala! Or open up a contest for the kids, whoever makes the best sign wins a prize!

During the game, to really keep the kids busy and watching, challenge them to a game of I Spy! Have the kids look for items/objects during the game starting with letters of the alphabet. Make it challenging by designating a section of the alphabet to each quarter: 1st Quarter: Letters A-G, 2nd Quarter: H-M, and so on. If a football is seen in the first quarter that counts, a commercial with a horse in the second quarter, and quarterback in the third, etc. After the game read off all the objects and whoever has the most per quarter wins!
How are you looking to make this year's gathering kid friendly? Share your plans with us on our Facebook page!

Trick-or-Treating Safety
Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics
For kids (and parents too), Halloween is one of the best night's of the year. But as fun as it is to dress up and go out with friends and family to collect buckets of candy - trick-or-treating can also be dangerous if you aren't careful.
Take a look at some of these vital safety tips before venturing out this Halloween:
Whether you are accompanying your kids or they're old enough to go out on their own, planning a route in advance is a big help. Trick or treating can take you several streets away from your house which can lead to sore legs and frustration. Stick to paths you and your child are familiar with to avoid getting lost. If your kids are going out on their own, have them check in regularly, by phone or by stopping back at home and make sure they do not deviate from the preplanned route.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
All that walking requires comfort. Girls should avoid heels to avoid discomfort. Make sure the shoes fit properly and shoelaces are tied as to not trip in the dark.
Hem Your Costume
Speaking of avoiding tripping, long costumes that drag on the ground can be dangerous. Make sure your child tries on the costume and it is at an appropriate length. Cut or hem anything that could make them fall.
Be Seen
Even though Daylight savings isn't until this weekend, it still gets dark pretty early. Apply reflective tape to your child's costume to make sure they are seen by drivers on the road. Carrying a flashlight is another great idea as well.
Make Sure YOU Can See
If a mask must be worn to complete a costume, make sure the holes for the eyes are large enough to clearly see both in front of you and out of the peripherals. You may need to cut the eye holes larger for more visibility. An alternative to a mask is using non-toxic make-up to complete the costume.
Use Flexible Props
If your child's costume involves a weapon, make sure it is rubber or plastic. Choose a prop that won't cause injury to your child or their friends.
Check Your Candy
After a fun night of trick-or-treating, parents be sure to check your child's candy as you sort through at the end of the night. Anything that is not in its original wrapper or looks like it has been opened, throw away. We'll be doing a candy need-to-know post in a few days so stay tuned!
Us here at Adelberg & Montalvan want to wish you and your family a very Happy and SAFE Halloween. Don't forget to bring in your candy from November 1st - 9th to participate in our candy buy back program for the troops!

Participate in our Candy 'Buy Back' Program!
Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics
Special announcement! Our offices will be doing a candy 'buy back' program in order to donate Halloween candy to the troops! We are giving out 1 raffle ticket per pound of candy which will enter you in the contest for a $25 gift card to the movies.
So try not to let your kids overload on sweets this Halloween and instead bring some in from November 1st - 9th to enter the raffle. Not sure which candy you should keep and which candy you should donate? See our list below for the best and the worst treats:
The Good:
- Plain chocolate is actually one of the best candies kids can treat themselves to on Halloween. It melts quickly and decreases the amount of time sugar is in contact with your teeth.
- Sugar free gum is great for kids to have after eating, it increases saliva which then works to wash the teeth and neutralize some of the acid produced by bacteria.
- Sugar filled candies - pixie stixs, fun dip, nerds, smarties, candy corn, etc. These all contain a high amount of sugar which can cause tooth decay.
- Sticky sweets - taffy, gummy candies, jelly beans. These all get stuck in the crevices between the teeth making it hard for saliva to wash away.
- Sour candies - sour patch kids. These candies have a higher acidic content, which can break down tooth enamel.

Children - Pre-teens: Need to Knows About Your Child's Smile
Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics
From ages 6 - 12, children begin to lose their baby teeth and their adult teeth start to appear. So what does that mean?
We've already discussed your child's smile from birth - 3 years old and 3 - 6 years old. So we're continuing our timeline and giving you some need to knows about your kid's oral health during their late childhood years.
See below for some age specific concerns and tips:
- Establish your pediatric dentist early and stick to regular checkups. The more comfortable your child is with their dental team, the more likely they'll keep up with their oral health care.
- Make sure that your kids get the fluoride they need. Discuss your kids’ specific fluoride needs with your dentist or pediatrician.
- Help your child brush their teeth until they can do so by themselves (usually around age 8). Then it's important to supervise and make sure they brush thoroughly 2min2x and spit out the toothpaste afterward.
- Encourage healthy eating habits! This includes a diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
- Orthodontic evaluations should happen by age 7. At this early age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but vigilant examination can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment.
- Make sure your child athletes are prepared - buy them a mouth-guard if they are participating in sports!

How To Care For Your Teeth When You're Expecting
Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics
Did you know that you could be doing more for your child's health by making sure to take care of your own teeth? In fact, good oral hygiene is incredibly important to expecting mothers. When a woman learns she’s pregnant, one of the first things she should do is make an appointment with her Dentist. You may not realize, but your gums are deeply connected to your overall health.
Did you know that Periodontal Disease has been linked to premature labor and low-birth-weight infants? It’s a scary thought but when you think about it, it makes perfect sense. The bacteria that accumulate in your gums when they’re in an unhealthy state can travel to your blood stream and cause problems for an expecting mother. The National Institute of Health defines Periodontitis as“a destructive inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the teeth and is caused by specific microorganisms or group of specific microorganisms. “ These microorganisms or bacteria can travel from your gums to the fetus and causes infections. When this occurs, mothers are more vulnerable to preterm birth and low birth weight babies.

Back to School Checklist
Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics
The time is nearly here for those three words your kids
dread... Back to School. So while
they finish up their summer reading and prepare for homework and art projects –
it’s about time you, parents, do some homework of your own.
Whether it’s your child’s first time at school or they’re returning
to the high school’s hallways, good
health and academic success begin at home. It’s important as a parent, to
make sure there are no obstacles in your child’s way that could hurt their
ability to thrive academically and socially.
So in preparation, here
is a checklist for kicking off the school year on the right foot:
- Sleep: No more summer late nights, it’s time for your kids to adjust back into a normal sleeping routine.
- Healthy Lunches: Though it may be easier to opt for prepackaged lunches, you can always make a few swaps for tasty and tooth friendly options. Whole wheat vs. white bread, water or flavored water vs. sodas, fruits and vegetables vs. sugary snacks.
- Exercise: Make exercising a habit! Exercise is important for any age to keep fit and prevent chronic diseases. It is also proven to improve sleep, reduce stress, and improve concentration – all of which your child needs to succeed in school.
- Backpacks: Backpack weight is an increasing problem every year. A backpack should weigh no more than 10% of his or her body weight. Make sure the backpack doesn’t hang more than 4 inches below the waistline and encourage your child the wear both shoulder straps vs. one.
- Stress: Stress is a normal part of life, but too much stress or stress that lasts too long can lead to problems (headaches, nauseous, trouble sleeping, etc.) Make sure your child knows they can talk to you, teach them time management techniques and help them unwind with a hobby.
Lastly, make sure your child’s dental health is on the right
track and schedule a Back to School appointment with us! Dental problems are
not as easy to spot in kids from parents and teachers. This is why it’s
important for your child to have their regular checkups.
Contact us at any of our locations to schedule your child’s
Back to School appointment today!
