Indoor Snow Day Activities

Indoor Snow Day Activities
Oh the weather outside is frightful! But not to worry, as you wait for this Snowmageddon to taper off, we've come up with some ways to help you pass the time indoors:
  • Make your own snow globes - Find some small jars with sealing lids (mason or jam jars are perfect), liquid glycerin, distilled water, glitter, and small objects (toys, ornaments, branches, etc). To begin, glue the small objects to the inside of the jars lid. Then, fill the jar with distilled water, a few drops of glycerin, and some spoonfuls of glitter. Once the lid and objects are dry, screw the lid onto the jar tightly, flip over and ta-da! Your very own snow globe
  • Create a mini indoor movie theater - Load up your Netflix queue or grab the top titles from your child's DVD collection. Lay a bunch of pillows and blankets around the floor for a super-cozy viewing space and prepare to watch as many movies as your attention spans can handle!
  • Bake some tooth friendlier desserts - This delicious dark chocolate truffle recipe uses Manuka honey - which has been proven to help kill bacteria in the mouth and prevent cavities from forming. No matter what item you plan to bake, just remember to rinse your mouth after to dislodge any sweet debris hiding around your teeth!
What are some of your family's favorite indoor snow day activities? Share with us on our Facebook page!

Fighting Bad Breath Naturally

As adults, bad breath is something we are all aware of, but did you know children can have halitosis too?
What is halitosis (bad breath)?
At least 90% of bad breath cases are due to poor dental hygiene. As we eat, food is broken down by the bacteria that naturally lives in our mouths. As the food and proteins are broken down they release a gas - this gas, hydrogen sulfide vapors, is smelly.

The most common cause of halitosis in children is due to plaque buildup and poor dental hygiene. It can be difficult to ensure your children are brushing, flossing, and rinsing thoroughly each time, and missed brushings leave the mouth primed for the bad breath bacteria to begin to multiply. So we have some tips to help fight bad breath naturally:

  • Choose toothpaste with Xylitol - Nature’s secret weapon, xylitol can be found in many of the fruits and vegetables we eat everyday. Xylitol aids in preventing bacteria from sticking to the teeth and works to keep saliva at a more neutral pH level. Xylitol for dental use can be found in many children’s toothpastes, mouthwashes, and as a chewing gum.
  • Stick to water - Encourage your child to drink more water throughout the day to help remove particles stuck between teeth as well as boost saliva production.
  • Clean between teeth daily - Many areas of the mouth are somewhat self-cleansing, however the greatest entrapment area is in between the teeth. Food debris and bacteria accumulating over time will not only cause bad breath odors but can also contribute to inflammation.
  • Don’t forget about the tongue - Teach your children to brush their entire tongue each time they brush their teeth. Clinical studies have shown that brushing the tongue significantly reduces and removes oral bacteria.
If your child’s bad breath doesn’t respond to the above tactics, there could be a more serious condition at hand. Make sure you have it checked immediately. Stop the Spread of the Flu This Season

Just last month, more than 100 students were kept out of the Levittown school district with the flu (or flu like symptoms). And according to the below News 12 report earlier this week - experts say this just may be the beginning.
News 12
As the flu bug continues to ramp up on LI, we have some tips to help protect you and your kids this season:
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol based hand rub
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth - germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces frequently touched at home, work, or school - especially when someone is ill
  • Store your toothbrush in a place where it can dry without touching other brushes - this prevents airborne bacteria from hoping from one brush to the next
  • Also, get a new brush at the start of an illness and replace it after the cold or flu has run its course

#TuesdayTips - for Healthy Teeth in 2015

Now that 2015 is underway, many people have started on their goal to lead a healthier lifestyle in the new year - so why not add improving your dental health to your resolution list?

The following are some tips for healthy teeth to make sure you and your family have a healthy smile all through 2015:

  • Brush and floss daily - Brush your teeth for two minutes, two times per day and complete your dental care routine by flossing. Flossing helps to remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth where the bristles can’t always reach.
  • Smart snacking - Eating a variety of nutrient rich foods from all food groups helps promote healthy teeth and gums. Make sure your family has a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, low fat dairy products, and whole grains for optimum oral health.
  • Limit sugary beverages - A steady consumption of soft drinks/sugary beverages is one of the leading causes of tooth decay. The sugar in these drinks combines with the bacteria in your mouth forming an acid that wears away at enamel, causing cavities. Limit the amount of sugar beverages daily and incorporate more water into your everyday consumption.
  • Schedule regular dental visits - Regular dental appointments are crucial in spotting oral health problems early, when treatment options tend to be easier and more affordable. Plus these visits also help to prevent many oral problems from developing in the fist place!
Start the new year off fresh and schedule your dental visits with us! We specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment. Call (516) 798-1111or visit our website to schedule an appointment at any of our three Long Island locations.
