Let's Get This Straight: Q&A About Retainers

Hooray -- the time has come, your child’s braces are coming off! No more needing to avoid certain foods or use specialized tools for cleaning, but you're not out of the woods just yet.

Children’s teeth continue to grow and shift into adulthood, which is why there is a crucial second step to keeping their smiles perfect -- retainers. Here are some answers to the most common retainer questions.

1. Why Does My Child Have To Wear A Retainer?
Nothing is permanent in orthodontics! We help align the teeth, but they can move after braces come off -- defeating the purpose of all that hard work! Consistent retainer use will help keep their teeth straight and keep you from coming back for braces for the second time, phew!

2. What Kind Of Retainer Will They Get?
There are multiple kinds of retainers, fixed and removable, which will be chosen based off which one is best for your child’s individual needs.

3. How Long Will My Child Have To Wear A Retainer?
Typically, the first six months after braces are removed, retainers should be worn every day. Over time, the teeth will stabilize, and your child can wear their retainer more infrequently -- delivering that news will be a good day!

4. How Can I Help My Child Care For Their Retainer?
First, always make sure your child is carrying the plastic case made to hold their retainer. If they are eating at school or on a playdate, you want to make sure that when they take off their retainer, it is in a safe place and doesn’t contract germs. Your child should remove their retainer before brushing in the morning and at night and clean their retainer before placing it back in their mouth. Give us a call if you have any cleaning questions.

5. Will A Retainer Hurt Them?
Each retainer is custom fit to a child’s mouth. If they continuously wear it when they are supposed to, it should fit comfortably and not hurt. If your child moves away from the consistent use of their retainer, their teeth will shift, and the retainer will feel tight in their mouth. Help them to remember they can avoid any discomfort and keep their beautiful smile if they consistently wear their retainer.

If you have any other questions or concerns regarding your child’s orthodontic health, please give our offices a call!

Brace Yourself: Braces-Friendly Recipe Ideas

It happened, your child got braces, and now their life is ruined -- their usual words, not ours, of course.

When your child gets braces, they may feel as if their food choices are limited. And while yes, some snacks should be avoided you can rest assured that there are still plenty of braces-friendly options:

Breakfast Pancakes
A huge breakfast favorite and luckily kids with braces can still eat them! Change up the recipe for a more healthy alternative. TIP: Replace syrup with applesauce. Syrup is high in sodium, sugar, and carbohydrates -- yuck!

Smoothies
A great breakfast for brace-filled mouths on-the-go! Check out these delicious smoothie recipes and keep these tips in mind to keep your smoothie healthy.

Cold Pasta Salad
This can be prepared in a variety of ways with many different ingredients. Your child can enjoy this dish for lunch and/or dinner! Don’t forget: stay clear of hard vegetables that may hurt your child’s mouth.

Acai Bowls
Acai bowls look good and taste even better! These delicious small berries are packed with antioxidants, amino acids, and essential fatty acids you didn’t know your child needed in their life! Be sure to try one of these recipes.

Lasagna
A delicious dinner dish for kids and they will love to make it with you too! Keep this dish on the light side with whole wheat noodles and lean ground beef.

Frozen Banana “Ice Cream”
This is a healthy alternative to actual ice cream -- dairy, fat, and sugar-free!

Foods to AVOID:
  • Hard nuts, candies, fruits (apples and pears)
  • Hard vegetables (carrots and corn on the cob)
  • Chips
  • Pretzels
  • Taco shells
  • Pizza crust
  • Sticky stuff like taffy, gum, or caramels
  • Foods that are high in acidity that could cause discoloration (lemons, limes, or sodas)

Importance of Pediatric Dental and Orthodontic Care

Happy National Orthodontic Health Month! As October brings orthodontic health into focus, the staff here at Adelberg Montalvan want to discuss the importance of early orthodontic treatment and the benefits of a pediatric dental/orthodontic team approach to providing care.

For the past several years, the orthodontic profession has seen a shift focusing on early childhood treatment. Because of this, the ability of the pediatric dentist to monitor the child’s growth and development, identify the onset of certain problems, and then make the appropriate referral to the orthodontist makes them an indispensable gatekeeper for coordinated patient care.

Early childhood treatment usually entails a TWO-PHASE approach to orthodontic treatment:
  • The FIRST PHASE occurs when the child still has both their primary (baby) and permanent (adult) teeth.
  • The SECOND PHASE – which is usually full top and bottom braces - occurs at a later stage when all of the permanent teeth have erupted.

Benefits of First Phase Treatment

  • Early treatment occurs while the child’s jaw bones are still soft. Because the bones are still pliable, this allows the orthodontist to utilize appliances that will guide and direct the growth of the upper and lower jaws so that they can correctly relate to each other. Some examples of misaligned jaws are crossbites, underbites, deep overbites, or excessively protruding teeth.
  • Permanent teeth can be accommodated. By developing the jaws at an early age, there’s more of an opportunity to accommodate all the permanent teeth - thereby alleviating the need for extractions of permanent teeth later in life due excessive crowding.
  • Potentially destructive habits can be stopped. Another reason for early childhood treatment is focused on the cessation of habits such as thumb sucking and tongue thrusting. If left untreated, these habits will negatively affect both the teeth, as well as the jaws.
These are just a few of many different reasons why it is both beneficial and important to perform early orthodontic treatment.  Leaving such conditions untreated until all permanent teeth erupt could result in discrepancies too severe to achieve with braces.

If you're seeking orthodontic treatment for your child, consult with one of our orthodontists here at Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental & Orthodontics. Let us help identify and appropriately treat these problems early on to make sure your child’s orthodontic experience is easier in the long run. What Foods to Avoid When Wearing Braces

When kids or teens first get traditional braces, they may not realize how quickly their diet has to change. As strong and sturdy as these orthodontic appliances are, they still need to be treated with care. That means eating foods that are brace safe, and steering clear of ones that can cause trouble!

During orthodontic treatment, help your child avoid:
  • Sticky Foods - Like gum, chewy candies, etc as they can easily get stuck in brackets and wires - not only causing a mess but tooth decay if not properly removed!
  • Hard Foods - Such as nuts, hard rolls, hard candies, etc as they can break or harm the wires and brackets.
  • Food on Bones - For instance ribs or chicken wings because these too can damage or knock off wires and brackets.
But don’t get discouraged! There are plenty of foods out there your child CAN eat!
  • Fruits and Vegetables - Mashed potatoes, spinach, bananas, etc are all soft and easy to chew. For the harder fruits and veggies (like carrots or apples) just be sure to cut them into smaller pieces instead of biting directly into them.
  • Treats - Ice cream, shakes, and smoothies are also great options! The coldness actually helps soothe the soreness caused by the braces as well as reduce any swelling of soft tissue!
  • Meats and Poultry - Items like soft-cooked chicken and deli meat are soft enough to not cause problems when your child bites into them.
  • Gains - Noodles, pasta, soft-cooked rice, etc are all gentle on the mouth which is key for sensitive teeth.
If you're seeking orthodontic treatment for your child, consult with one of our orthodontists here at Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental & Orthodontics. Let us help you identify and reduce problems early on to make sure your child’s orthodontic experience is easier in the long run. Call (516) 798-1111 or visit our website to schedule an appointment.

Pediatric Orthodontic FAQs

While you may know an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, did you know that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at age 7?

Are there other orthodontic questions you have in mind? Brace yourself - we have the answers:
Why should I choose an orthodontic specialist?
Teeth, and sometimes entire facial structures, are permanently changed by orthodontic treatment. It is important that the treatment be appropriate and properly completed. Orthodontic specialists have extensive and specialized training that enables them to provide their patients with professional, personalized treatments.

How do I schedule an appointment for an initial exam?
If you or your child can potentially benefit from orthodontic treatment, simply call our office, send us an e-mail or fill out our appointment request form online. We will be happy to schedule an appointment for you. When you call to schedule your appointment, our front office staff will request some basic information from you.

What will happen at the initial examination appointment?
Upon arriving, each patient and parent will be seen by the staff and doctor who will acclimate you to our office and prepare for the initial exam. We will take the necessary photographs and X-rays to allow us to make a proper diagnosis. The doctor will then complete a brief, but thorough, exam. To read more about your first visit, see our First Visit Page.

What will I learn from the initial examination?
There are five essential questions that we will cover during the initial examination:
Is there an orthodontic problem, and if so, what is it?
What must be done to correct the problem?
Will any teeth need to be removed?
How long will the treatment take to complete?
How much will the treatment cost?

Do braces hurt?
Generally, braces do not "hurt." After certain visits, teeth may be sore for a few days. In these situations, pain medications such as Advil or Tylenol will ease the discomfort. However, after most visits, patients do not feel any soreness at all! We often remind our patients, “It does not have to hurt to work!”

Can orthodontic correction occur while a child has baby teeth?

Yes. Some orthodontic problems are significant enough to require early intervention. However, if a patient is not yet ready for treatment, we will follow that patient's growth and development until the time is right for treatment to begin.

For more of our frequently asked questions, please visit our website! Is there something we missed? Let us know on our Facebook page, perhaps the rest of the Adelberg Montalvan community is curious as well!

Best Time to Start Orthodontic Treatment

Although an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at age 7. At this young age, the first adult molars erupt - thus establishing the back bite. During this time, we can evaluate front to back and side to side tooth relationships to see if there may be a possible overbite, open bite, crowding, or gummy smiles.

By having your child seek early evaluation, we not only will be able to detect any future problems but also intercept them and anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment. This includes:

  • Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
  • Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
  • Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Preserving space for unerupted teeth
  • Reducing the need for tooth removal
  • Reducing treatment time with braces
Interceptive treatment prevents serious problems from occurring later in life. Consult with one of our orthodontists here at Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental & Orthodontics for your child’s first orthodontist appointment. Let us help you identify and reduce problems early on to make sure your child’s orthodontic experience is easier in the long run! Call us today!

Flossing Products for All Dental Conditions

Daily flossing plays a major role in plaque removal - and yet it’s still something that many adults and children avoid! Unlike a toothbrush which can clean the tops and outer surfaces of teeth and gums, floss is specifically designed to get into and clean all of the nooks and crannies of the mouth.

Dental floss isn’t the only effective product for tooth flossing - there’s actually many products on the market designed to meet the needs of people of all ages with any type of dental condition. If one of the below conditions apply to you - consider these options:

  • Sensitive Gums - Choose a soft floss that will slide easily and comfortably between teeth to prevent bleeding gums.
  • Braces - Opt for a specialized floss with a stiff end that can easily threat between the braces and teeth.
  • Younger Child - Select a kid-friendly flossing tool, specially designed to be easy for kids to handle and sport child-friendly characters!
  • Difficulty Using Floss - Try using an electric flosser instead - these provide just the right amount of pressure to leave your gums healthy and happy.
If you’re still having trouble getting your children to floss properly, please visit 2min2x.org for more tips, look up books specifically about flossing, or ask us for guidance. Give us a call to schedule an appointment today! 631.360.7337 or 516.798.1111

Spring Sports: The Importance of a Mouthguard

Spring sports are upon us and while these sports are important for building your child’s confidence, team working skills, and physical endurance, there is also an inherent risk of injury. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, about 10-39% of childhood dental injuries are sports related.

Although we can never completely remove all risk of dental injury from playing sports, most of these injuries could have been easily prevented had the athlete been wearing a mouthguard:

Fractured Tooth
Enamel and dentin are both protectors of the inner living tooth tissue also known as the pulp. In the event of a serious tooth factor, both the dentin and the pulp tissue would be exposed, calling for an immediate visit to the dentist. To prevent the tooth from completely falling out, the dentist may splint the loose tooth by bonding it to adjacent teeth.

A minor fracture involves chipping of the enamel only. Your child may feel sharp or rough tooth edges irritating the cheek and tongue. Generally, the only thing that the tooth would need is a filling or a cap to protect the pulp from any exposure.

Lost Teeth
Commonly, the upper front adult teeth run the highest risk of being knocked out. In this case, retrieve the lost teeth, keep them moist, and replace them into their sockets as soon as possible. Time is precious, teeth re-implanted within an hour of the incident often reattach to their teeth sockets.

Teeth Displacement
Instead of a tooth being completely knocked out of its sockets, it’s simply displaced. The tooth may be pulled out a bit to appear longer or pushed in to appear shorter. A displaced tooth can be twisted, turned, but never leaves the mouth. The sooner your child sees a dentist the easier it will be to bring it back into proper alignment, whether through splitting or orthodontic brackets and wires.

There’s no need to risk it, any mouth guard is better than NO mouth guard. But when trying to choose which one to go with, how do you decide which is best for your child? Check out our blog “Mouth Guard or No Mouth Guard” to determine the best type of mouthguard for your child to keep their teeth safe from injury. Feel free to discuss your options with us today!

Celebrate Read Across America Day!

Happy Read Across America Day! Kicking off its 17th year, the National Education Association hosts this annual event on none other than Dr. Seuss’ birthday, today March 3rd. Across the country, thousands of schools and libraries participate in bringing together children and books to encourage a nation of readers.

So what’s the connection between reading skills and oral health? Truth is, oral health problems cause students across the nation to miss 51 million school hours per year. Students who are absent miss crucial instruction time - especially in the early years when improving reading skills are a major focus.

Celebrate today by sharing some of our favorite oral health stories with your kids:

The Tooth Book by Dr. Seuss
“In this rollicking rhyming tale, Dr. Seuss takes a hilarious look at teeth, where to find them, what to do with them and how to look after them!”

Open Wide: Tooth School Inside
“It's time for tooth school and Dr. Flossman is excited to meet the incoming class of 32--eight incisors, four canines, eight premolars, and twelve molars, including the four wisdom teeth. There's just so much to learn--from brushing and flossing to dentin and pulp to every student's nightmare: tooth decay!”

"What child can resist imitating a chimp brushing its teeth back and forth? Or a shark that flosses every day? Youngsters will have lots of fun learning about proper dental hygiene in this delightful pop-up book."

How To Rock Braces and Glasses
For your middle school aged children: When gorgeous, uber-harsh, and uber-stylish, kacey Simon - the undisputed social dictator of Marquette Middle School, finds herself needing to wear Coke bottle glasses and braces - what is she to do? In this hilarious reversal of the 'cool crowd' versus the 'nerd herd', a popular girl finds herself in 'Loserville' and realizes maybe rocking braces and glasses is the best thing ever to happen to her!

Shark Teeth!

Have you noticed your child’s permanent teeth erupting behind the baby teeth? Don’t worry - this actually isn’t abnormal! Ectopic eruption, or shark teeth, can happen at any time, but are most common during two periods in a child’s development: around age 6 when the lower front teeth come in and around age 11 when the upper back molars appear.

So what do you do once these shark teeth appear? Well, if the baby teeth are extremely loose to begin with - you can let nature take its course and allow them to fall out shortly there after. Otherwise, it’s important to remove the teeth so the permanent teeth can move into the right spot. Delaying removal of the baby teeth can create a loss of jaw space and create orthodontic (braces) problems in the future.

Don't be worried about your child having gaps in their teeth for long. It’s amazing how quickly the permanent teeth will start moving into the proper spot immediately after the obstacle has been removed. Added natural pressure from the tongue will guide the new teeth into the right position within a few weeks!

So don't worry too much if you notice these shark teeth popping up. Be sure to keep an eye on your child or schedule an appointment with us to address any concerns.

Indoor Snow Day Fun

With all these snow days you may be running out of activities for the kids. If they’re tired of outdoor fun or would rather avoid this morning’s freezing rain, here are a few in house ideas to pass the time:

Bring the snow inside! Well, not literally.. Round up some bars of soaps and get ready to create some snow clouds. Microwave a bar of Ivory soap for a few minutes and watch how it expands. Put the fresh snow clouds in the bathtub and let the kiddies play, they can make shapes, snowmen, and in the end reshape them into soap bars. For a full tutorial with photos click here »

Treasure hunts! Make paper hats out of construction paper and pretend to be pirates, sailing aorund the house searching for treasure. The treasure can range from a little piece of candy to snack time treats. Another option? If you have a small puzzle in storage, hide the puzzle pieces throughout your home. Every piece found is one step closer to completeing the puzzle!

Made a big purchase or moved recently? Break out those huge cardboard boxes. Let your kids decorate the boxes into a spaceship, boat, club house, you name it. They can spend hours coloring, cutting out holes, glueing/taping on decorations, etc. Once they’re finished for the day just fold the box back up and save for the next bad weather day!

Turn your living room into a movie theater! Put sheets over the windows and round up all the pillows in the house to make one large pillow bed and lounge. Dig into your DVD collection or check out Netflix and On Demand channels. Your children will think it’s their lucky day, they won’t have to take off their pajamas or be told to turn off the television!

Do you have any ‘go to’ snow day indoor activities? Share with us on our Facebook page for the rest of the Adelberg Montalvan community!
