Celebrate National Brush Day This Sunday!

Don’t forget - National Brush Day is this Sunday, November 1st! And while your kids may still be going through their trick-or-treat bags, you can make the pledge to help your child brush for two minutes, twice a day, every day to limit the effects of sugar consumption on teeth.

We know brushing is the foundation of any good oral health routine, so brushing properly is important. See below for proper brushing techniques you can share with your kids:
  • Place the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle along the gum line. Gently move the toothbrush back and forth on each tooth.
  • Repeat the process brushing the inside surface of each tooth as well as the top/chewing surface of each tooth.
  • Tilt the brush vertically and brush up and down to clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth.
  • Once all teeth are cleaned, brush the tongue to remove any odor causing bacteria.
Have fun celebrating! If you have any questions about how to improve your child's oral health please give our offices a call.

Keep Tiny Teeth Top of Mind this Halloween

When it comes to Halloween candies - not all treats are created equal. Some can even have a scary effect on tiny teeth! Keep your child’s teeth top of mind this Halloween, see below for which candies are the most frightening and which ones will make for a healthy Halloween holiday!

Items to avoid:
Gummies, caramel, sour candies or any chewy/sticky candy can easily get stuck in all the nooks and crannies of the mouth, making it hard for saliva to wash particles away - leading to tooth decay.

Better choices:
Treats like milk chocolate and snack sized packs of pretzels or crackers are better options for teeth when consumed in moderation. Since these are less sticky than the above and also are not high in acidity - they are less harmful to tiny teeth.

Best choices:
Dark chocolate - due to its antioxidant properties of preventing infections and bacteria from sticking to teeth - and sugar-free gum with xylitol are the best treat choices. Research shows that xylitol can help promote the presence of healthy bacteria that protect the teeth and fight the buildup of plaque.

With all the treats your kids are bound to bring home, we want to remind you to allow them to snack in moderation and to always brush and rinse after consumption.

October is National Dental Hygiene Month

Now in its sixth consecutive year, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) and the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company have teamed up for National Dental Hygiene Month to help in increasing awareness surrounding the importance of maintaining good oral health.

To echo these sentiments, we want to remind our patients and their families to “Do the Daily 4” - not just sometimes, but all the time.
  1. Floss Daily. Flossing is specifically designed to reach all the areas of the mouth that the toothbrush may miss. Ensuring flossing is part of your daily dental care routine is important to prevent plaque buildup - which eventually can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
  2. Brush 2x a Day. Once of the single most important methods for keeping mouth monsters at bay, brushing for two minutes twice a day is necessary to maintain healthy smiles.
  3. Rinse with Mouthwash. Remember, your teeth aren’t the only things in your mouth. Your tongue and gums could benefit from some care as well. Finish your oral care routine with an antiseptic mouthwash that carries the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
  4. Chew Sugar-Free Gum. Chewing sugar-free gum after eating is a fun way to help keep teeth healthy. Since chewing stimulates salivary glands and the flavors in sugar-free gum increase the quantity of saliva in the mouth, this ultimately helps in cleaning food particles and neutralizing plaque acids on teeth.
Maintaining good dental care habits not only benefits oral health but can improve your general health as well. Join us in celebrating National Dental Hygiene Month, give us a call to schedule an appointment today.

Adelberg Montalvan Has Gone PINK for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As you may know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in honor of the survivors, fighters, and those affected by breast cancer, we have again gone PINK at all of our locations.

We are proud to announce our offices are gloving up and joining the fight against breast cancer! We will be using pink products to raise money for finding a cure to this terrible disease.
It is said that roughly 1 in 8 women in the US will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. While early detection (regular self examinations and yearly mammograms for women over 40) is key for reducing breast cancer mortality - studies have also shown that taking care of your teeth and gums could decrease your breast cancer risk.

In general, gum disease causes inflammation, a marker for generalized ill-health. The inflammation is due to bacteria that forms plaque on the gums and teeth. This same bacteria can result in the Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegatocirus - both of which can suppress the body’s immune system, contributing to the incidence of breast cancer. This is why regular dental visits are important to monitor the health and condition of your teeth and gums.

Importance of Pediatric Dental and Orthodontic Care

Happy National Orthodontic Health Month! As October brings orthodontic health into focus, the staff here at Adelberg Montalvan want to discuss the importance of early orthodontic treatment and the benefits of a pediatric dental/orthodontic team approach to providing care.

For the past several years, the orthodontic profession has seen a shift focusing on early childhood treatment. Because of this, the ability of the pediatric dentist to monitor the child’s growth and development, identify the onset of certain problems, and then make the appropriate referral to the orthodontist makes them an indispensable gatekeeper for coordinated patient care.

Early childhood treatment usually entails a TWO-PHASE approach to orthodontic treatment:
  • The FIRST PHASE occurs when the child still has both their primary (baby) and permanent (adult) teeth.
  • The SECOND PHASE – which is usually full top and bottom braces - occurs at a later stage when all of the permanent teeth have erupted.

Benefits of First Phase Treatment

  • Early treatment occurs while the child’s jaw bones are still soft. Because the bones are still pliable, this allows the orthodontist to utilize appliances that will guide and direct the growth of the upper and lower jaws so that they can correctly relate to each other. Some examples of misaligned jaws are crossbites, underbites, deep overbites, or excessively protruding teeth.
  • Permanent teeth can be accommodated. By developing the jaws at an early age, there’s more of an opportunity to accommodate all the permanent teeth - thereby alleviating the need for extractions of permanent teeth later in life due excessive crowding.
  • Potentially destructive habits can be stopped. Another reason for early childhood treatment is focused on the cessation of habits such as thumb sucking and tongue thrusting. If left untreated, these habits will negatively affect both the teeth, as well as the jaws.
These are just a few of many different reasons why it is both beneficial and important to perform early orthodontic treatment.  Leaving such conditions untreated until all permanent teeth erupt could result in discrepancies too severe to achieve with braces.

If you're seeking orthodontic treatment for your child, consult with one of our orthodontists here at Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental & Orthodontics. Let us help identify and appropriately treat these problems early on to make sure your child’s orthodontic experience is easier in the long run.
