Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend! Memorial Day has often been seen as the unofficial start to summer, giving us a glimpse of what's to come. Knowing that summer break, family BBQs, graduation parties, day camps and other fun is on the horizon, we want to make sure you don’t forget to schedule your child’s pre-summer dental visit with us.

We know the excitement that summer brings and in the midst of it all we want to make sure tiny teeth are taken care of. As you know, a twice-yearly checkup is your child’s best defense against poor oral health; these appointments help us monitor your child and catch problems early, when problems are more treatable.

Why did you choose pediatric dentistry or orthodontics?

I taught dance to small children for almost ten years.  I love working with parents and children, so going into this field made sense! 

Did you always think you'd end up working in pediatric dental? What other career dreams did you have as a child?
I wanted to be a nurse, and a dancer, but instead became a computer programmer, systems analyst.

What’s your favorite thing about working with kids every day?
Kids are fun, period.  

Do you have any tips and tricks to calm first time patients?
I smile and greet people in the warmest way, sometimes it can turn an angry person around.

Any suggestions for parents on how to prep kids for their first time visit?
Children read their parents better than anyone. I would tell parents to be upbeat, happy, and always smile when talking about the dentist.

What is the number one problem you encounter when it comes to children’s dental hygiene?
Not taking enough time to brush (my kids especially). Make sure to brush for TWO minutes TWICE daily!

What do you do when you’re not in the office?
I enjoy spending time with my family, I volunteer in a museum and also study dance!

Do you have a favorite movie or TV show?
Downton Abbey   

 
Do you have any pets? What kinds and what are their names? 

I have an old cat that came with the name Boots, though I would have named her Edith, she is beautiful.

What is your favorite vacation spot? 

Wyoming – the Big horn Mountains, and Hawaii

Do you like to cook? What is your specialty?

I make a great Brisket, and mash potatoes, and a great pot of sauce and meatballs!

Who is your favorite band?

The Nick of Time ( My husband’s band)

What is your favorite sushi roll?  

I don’t know - I actually haven’t had any yet!

Did you always know you wanted to work in pediatric dentistry?

No! My dream was always to be a mom.  

What’s your favorite thing about working with kids everyday?  

I love the children's innocence.

Do you have any tips and tricks to calm first time patients?   

I actually tell them that the Doctor doesn't know how to count and that they will need to help them! Focusing on counting with the Doctor keeps their mind off of what's going on.

How do you try to make dentist visits fun and not scary? 

Look at our office, it's easy!

In your experience, what are kids most afraid of when they go to the dentist?

The fear of the unknown. But after they know it won't hurt - they love coming back! 

What do you do when you’re not in the office? 

Everything! Soccer, brownies, dance, basketball and homework. It's easier to be at work!

Do you have a favorite movie or TV show? 

Friends.

Do you have any pets? What kinds and what are their names? 

I do! Her name is Molly, she is an Australian Labradoodle.

Who is your favorite band?

Zac Brown Band.

What is your favorite sushi roll?

Shrimp tempura.

Jello, yuck or yum? 

YUCK.

Would you rather swim with sharks or pet a lion? 

How about neither? But, if I HAD to choose - pet a lion.

Allergies & The Dentist

If your child has allergies, you’re probably well versed in exercising caution at parties, grocery stores, restaurants - but what about the dentist? At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, we always put our patient’s health and well being first, and have taken steps to minimize allergic reactions in patients when coming in for a visit.

Some common allergies include:
Gluten - About 15% of the population suffers from some kind of gluten sensitivity like celiac disease, gluten allergy, and gluten intolerance. To make sure your children are safe, all of our products are gluten free.
Metals - We know some patients may be sensitive to metals, like silver or mercury commonly found in fillings, so we offer white composite fillings.
Latex - The exact cause of this allergy is unknown, but repeat exposure to latex and rubber products can trigger symptoms. We only use non-latex materials that way it’s never a question whether a patient has a latex allergy.

We know the anxieties that can accompany dental visits - especially if allergies are involved.
