Smile Friendly Foods for Your Summer BBQ

May is National Barbecue Month - an unofficial holiday but still an exciting way to start the summer. In the spirit of dental health, we wanted to share some of the best and worst foods you should have at your next outdoor feast (like this Memorial Day Weekend perhaps!):

What to serve -

  • Fish: Fish is rich with omega-3 fatty acids which is not only great for fighting gum disease but also helps calm any inflammation surrounding irritated gums. Try grilling some salmon or trout soon!
  • Veggie Skewers: Nothing beats grilled veggie skewers, especially knowing they are an important part of a balanced diet and have been noted for decreasing tooth decay! Add some bell peppers, zucchini, cauliflower, and mushroom skewers to your next party menu.
  • Fruit: For a healthy, summer twist on dessert - throw some fruits on a skewer and grill them as well! As many fruits are good sources for vitamin C - they work to kill bacteria in the mouth.
What not to serve -
  • Chips and canned dip: Canned dips are full of unhealthy preservatives, additives, and sugars. While any major brand of potato chip is fried in oil with added preservatives. If chips are a must have, look into purchasing an all natural/whole grain brand.
  • BBQ sauce - Super sugary and sticky, eating foods covered in BBQ isn’t the most smile friendly.
  • Baked beans - While these may seem healthy, there’s actually a lot of sodium, sugar, and other unhealthy additives.

Have a Kid Friendly Super Bowl Party

The Broncos and Seahawks go head to head this Sunday for the Super Bowl - are you ready? A Super Bowl get together should be all sorts of fun for the whole family. That’s why we’ve put together some snacks and activities your younger guests can enjoy alongside the adults. See below for some ideas!

Super Bowl Snacks:

Who doesn’t love potato skins at a Super Bowl Party? This year try making them out of sweet potatoes - bonus, sweet potatoes are rich in Vitamin A, which helps strengthen tooth enamel and works to keep your teeth healthy! Get the recipe here »

Or keep it simple! Try some fruit skewers with honeyed yogurt dip. Just choose your favorite fruits and arrange them on a skewer, including a mixture of honey and plain yogurt for dipping. Bonus, the good bacteria in yogurt helps fight the bad ones in your mouth and some fruits, like pineapples and strawberries, work as natural teeth whiteners! Be sure to add them to your skewer, get the recipe here »

Super Bowl Activities:

Pre-game, have your kids make paper pom poms or signs to cheer on their favorite team. Gather some tissue paper and cut into small strips to look like streamers. Tape the strips to one end of a paper towel holder and vuala! Or open up a contest for the kids, whoever makes the best sign wins a prize!

During the game, to really keep the kids busy and watching, challenge them to a game of I Spy! Have the kids look for items/objects during the game starting with letters of the alphabet. Make it challenging by designating a section of the alphabet to each quarter: 1st Quarter: Letters A-G, 2nd Quarter: H-M, and so on. If a football is seen in the first quarter that counts, a commercial with a horse in the second quarter, and quarterback in the third, etc. After the game read off all the objects and whoever has the most per quarter wins!

How are you looking to make this year's gathering kid friendly? Share your plans with us on our Facebook page!

Healthy Eating to Kick Start The Summer!

Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics

Memorial Day celebrates the unofficial start of summer; which means frequent trips to the ice cream truck and pool snack bar with your little ones. Problem is, most of these foods – though may be convenient, contain loads of sugar that are unhealthy for your child and their teeth!

Need some quick, simple, healthy snack ideas for your kids this summer? Try some of ours, they fit perfectly in packed lunches:
  • Ants on a log – spread peanut butter on celery sticks and sprinkle them with raisins
  • Cottage cheese with cut-up peaches, nectarines, pineapple, or bananas
  • Canned salmon mixed with low-fat mayo and spread on baked whole-grain crackers or celery stalks
  • Make your own pizza lunchables – use a multigrain sandwich thin, turkey pepperoni, pizza sauce, and shredded low fat cheese
And, as the temperature heats up – try dipping a banana in yogurt, rolling in crushed cereal, and freezing it for a tasty frozen treat!
