Exploring Dental Health with Children on the Spectrum
We know that oral health is a very important piece of daily living, but for children with autism - developing the proper dental health habits can be challenging. As we finish up Autism Awareness Month, we wanted to continue to share some tips for those with children on the spectrum:
Get started at home: For some children with autism, brushing may be difficult. You may need to desensitize them to help them get used to the sensation of brushing. Start by touching a toothbrush to the lips or just inside the mouth. Eventually you may be able to begin brushing one tooth for a second or two. Showing your child how you brush can also be helpful.
Accommodate their needs: While sure, most of us brush our teeth in the bathroom - a child with autism may feel more comfortable elsewhere. Feel free to accommodate their needs - sit with them on a couch or another area of the home they feel at ease.
Use visual aids: Visual supports and schedules can also come in handy. For one example - you may choose to photograph each step of the tooth brushing process, print them, add Velcro to the backs and place them in chronological order on a board. Once each step of the process is complete, remove that image.
Find the right dentist: At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, we are devoted to providing the best mental and dental care for all of our patients, including those with special healthcare needs. Our doctors are specially trained in special needs dentistry and are committed to providing your child with the attention and care they deserve to create a positive dental experience.
Majority of our special needs patients are treated in the chair, awake - but we also offer in house sedation when needed. If you have a child on the spectrum, or with other special needs, please give us a call to come in for a walk through. You and your child will be able to visit the office prior to having an actual ‘appointment.’ During that visit you can meet the dentists, tour the office, sit in the dental chair and ask any questions or concerns you may have. Contact us for more information today.

National Facial Protection Month
This month is National Facial Protection Month and we’re here to remind you just how important it is to wear a mouthguard during sports.
Did you know an athlete is 60 times more likely to suffer harm to the teeth if they are not wearing a mouthguard? And that a mouthguard should be worn during all sports - not just those that are high collision or contact.
Help your children protect their teeth and faces from injury with these tips!
Wear a mouthguard. There are three types of mouthguards available: custom made, boil and bite, and stock guards. Of course any mouthguard is better than NO mouthguard, but we do recommend receiving a custom made one from us. These provide optimum protection as they are made uniquely for your child’s mouth.
Wear a helmet. Helmets are key in helping to prevent serious damage to the head. When choosing a helmet, it’s important to select one specific to the activity at hand. For example, football helmets are made to absorb multiple impacts, skate boarding helmets are designed to absorb high-speed impacts, etc.
Wear protective gear. This includes any necessary eyewear, face shields, and sport specific gear like shin guards for soccer, jockstrap, knee/elbow/shoulder pads, gloves, etc. Protective gear is important to help maintain the overall safety of an athlete participating in a certain sport.
If you’re looking for a mouthguard for your child, look no further. At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, we offer our very own mouthguard centers so your athlete can receive a custom fit mouth guard. Please come by any of our 3 locations before your child’s next game to be sure a mouthguard is included as part of their uniform!

Teaching Kids About Dental Health
Knowing how to care for teeth starts in the classroom - and it’s never too early to begin education! By using the below resources you can help educate students of all ages to get excited about dental health:
Dental health speaker: One of the easiest resources you have, is us! We can come to your child’s school or day care to help teach them everything they need to know about taking care of tiny teeth. We even welcome class trips and scout groups to visit our offices for a free tour and lesson!
Easy to do activities: Leading dentistry websites offer a plethora of free materials to help start discussions with children about their oral health. Get them talking about healthy habits - tying into how caring for your mouth is as important as caring for the rest of the body. Show the USDA “Choose My Plate” chart and explain and review food groups and why each is important for healthy bodies and teeth. You may also want to discuss tooth functions by asking children to make lists of food to be eaten with and without teeth. Have children pronounce the alphabet and tell which sounds are made using the teeth, tongue and lips. If you didn’t have teeth - would it be easy to say “teeth” “toys” or “toothbrush”?
Print and video resources: While National Children’s Dental Health Month has passed, you can still download the full sets of 2016 activity sheets on ADA’s website! So print the collection today and stock up on markers! Your kids (or students) will be on the road to 'Defeat Monster Mouth' in no time. For video resources, head over to Mouth Healthy Kids for the American Dental Association’s award-winning PSAs, Dudley and Friends. There you’ll also find some games and quizzes and even more activity sheets for use.
If you’re interested in scheduling a FREE school visit or info session with us, give us a call at any of our three locations. Our staff would be more than happy to coordinate a visit.
