#TravelThursday - Tooth Care While Traveling

With your child’s spring break around the corner, you may have some travel plans secured (hopefully to a warmer, less rainy location). As such, we wanted to make sure you were prepared with some tooth care tips while traveling:

Pack properly - Make sure all toothbrushes are covered with a travel container large enough to provide air circulation and holes for drainage and ventilation. Be sure to clean the case thoroughly before and after the trip to rid any dirt or bacteria.

Purchase travel sized items - If you are only bringing a carry on, remember to comply with TSA rules. Travel sized toothpaste (3oz) can easily be stashed in your carry on bags. It may also be a good idea to bring a travel sized toothbrush in your purse for on the go cleaning. Remember, if staying at a hotel,

Bring some sugar free xylitol chewing gum
- When traveling, it’s easy to fall out of normal dental care routines. With nature’s secret weapon in gum form on hand, you can still take preventative oral health measures. Xylitol aids in preventing bacteria from sticking to the teeth as well as keeping saliva at a more neutral pH level. Chewing this gum will help to stimulate saliva and keep teeth clean and healthy.

Avoid dental emergencies - If possible, schedule your routine checkup with us prior to leaving. To prepare for emergencies while away, pack a “Dental Emergency Kit” including mouth guards for sporting activities, pain relievers, orthodontic wax for those with braces, cotton/gauze, and floss.

For any questions, concerns, or emergencies - we’re here for you and your child. Please feel free to contact us at any of our 3 locations.

#TestimonialTuesday - Patient Reviews

Why should you choose (and recommend to your friends) Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental for all of your child’s dental care needs?

Our testimonials speak for themselves!

“Great Experience. The atmosphere eliminates any fear or apprehension. The staff is extremely friendly and kind.” - Nicolas I. (March 18th)

“The Best! My son recently had a cavity filled using laser technology. Dr Mark is wonderful-patient and funny. I highly recommend this practice.” - Landon B. (February 26th)

“Dr. Jeanine has been working with my 4 1/2 year old since her first visit about two years ago. She was always shy and apprehensive about her visit and the doc has taken "baby" steps each time, helping her getting comfortable with the process. Our last appointment was a real success! Dr. Jeanine was able to complete the exam without my little one showing any signs of distress and my daughter left there smiling! She was so proud of how far she's come that I was practically in tears! The doctor has a great sense of how to work with my child! Very happy and grateful!” - Markella D. (February 22nd)

“I recommend this office to everyone I know. We love the way our daughter is and has been treated at this wonderful practice, not just professionally but the way everyone greets us and talks to her during whatever procedure she is going through. It is truly the epitome of what a pediatric based practice should be!! Thank you for all you do and doing it as well as you do. Keep up the great work.” - Brianna R. (January 22th)

“Dr. Adam is great! I never expected Madison to sit in the chair by herself! He distracted her the entire time! Very happy with our visit and hope to see Dr.Adam for their future visits!” - Alexis C. (January 17th)

Thank you to all who have shared their experiences with us, we always strive to care for our patients as if they were our own children and love hearing that they had a pleasant dental experience in our offices. Happy World Oral Health Day!

Every year on March 20th, the World Dental Federation brings us World Oral Health Day and this year’s global tagline is “Smille for Life.” Today (like everyday!) we celebrate the benefits of a healthy mouth and to promote worldwide awareness of the issues around oral health and the importance of looking after oral hygiene to everyone young and old.

Below we have some oral care musts for maintaining a happy, healthy mouth:

  1. Cut down on sugar consumption - Sugar is a major culprit in tooth decay as it causes plaque to form and eat away at your enamel and gums. Try to eliminate the amount of sugar snacks you consume and remember to brush and floss after each meal/snack.
  2. Choose the right toothbrush - Your toothbrush should have soft bristles and with the right technique - it should last you 2 - 3 months. If you notice bent or frayed bristles, you’re certainly overdo for a new brush.
  3. Practice proper technique - In addition to brushing twice a day, it’s also important to brush at a 45 degree angle, pointed towards the gum line using gentle, short, circular motions. Brush for two minutes and avoid aggressive brushing as to not damage teeth or gums!
  4. Flossing matters! - Flossing fosters healthier teeth and gums, plain and simple. Wrap about a foot of floss around your index fingers keeping about two inches out to work with. Unroll a fresh section for each tooth and keep the floss tight against the tooth to break up any plaque while leaving your gums in tip top shape.
If you have any questions about how to improve your child's oral health please give our offices a call. We specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment. Spring Cleaning - Oral Health Edition

Spring cleaning - a time for decluttering the home, donating old clothes, and taking care of the seasonal outdoor chores. It’s also the perfect time to improve your dental health routine!
In honor of tomorrow being the first day of Spring (minus the winter weather on the forecast), we wanted to help you brush up on some ways to not only spring clean your mouth, but your family’s as well:
  • Out with the old in with the new - When was the last time your household replaced their toothbrushes? If you’re struggling to remember it’s most certainly time. For a general rule of thumb, replace your toothbrush every 3 months.
  • Brush and floss regularly - Perhaps a New Year’s resolution was to stick to brushing and flossing regularly, and perhaps now you’ve slipped out of these good habits. Re-establish these habits now that the new season has arrived! Try keeping a travel toothbrush on hand (purse or car) to remind yourself to brush after a healthy lunch or a late breakfast. Add flossing to your nightly routine since during sleep, less saliva is produced to naturally clean the mouth, thus leaving bacteria to roam free and do some damage.
  • Schedule an appointment with us - Regular exams and cleanings are vital for all ages. We specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment and three Long Island locations. Head into the Spring in Summer with a healthy, bright smile and schedule your appointment today!

#WellnessWednesday - National Nutrition Month

Preparing healthy foods for a large family can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to break the bank. Help your family bite into a healthy lifestyle during National Nutrition Month! Save time, money and stress by following the below tips from ChooseMyPlate

Keep it simple: Don't worry about making things complicated. Healthy and creative meals can be simple - saving you money and stress.

Enlist little helpers: Divide jobs among family remembers - remember kids love being in the kitchen! With their help you can get more done and have more time to enjoy with your family.

Enjoy yourself - Feel yourself becoming stressed? Take a step back and remember to have fun and enjoy the company of those closest to you.

Holiday options - Consider your menu options around the holidays (Passover and Easter are around the corner after all). Choosing to serve brunch can save on food costs as eggs are less expensive and make a great protein for the main dish. For another fun idea opt to offer a yogurt parfait bar where everyone cam add their desired toppings to their yogurt.

Make it a potluck - Great option for large family gatherings - prepare a side dish and ask each family member to make the rest! Now there's less work on you and everyone can enjoy trying each other's creations.

Just as a balanced diet is good for our waistline - it's just as necessary for a healthy smile. We encourage you to also work some of these smile friendly options into family meals as well!

adelberg montalvan pediatric dental
Spring sports are right around the corner! Make sure your child has all the necessary equipment to keep his or her mouth safe, give us a call or stop by our offices to obtain a custom fit mouthguard.

Mouthguards are one of the most important pieces of sports equipment your child needs to stay safe and are significantly less expensive than the cost to repair an injury. Custom fit guards in particular offer superior fit, comfort, and protection for your child’s teeth. Since they are made from the highest quality material molded from an impression specifically of your child’s teeth, your athlete will be more likely to wear the guard due to its comfort!

At all three of our locations you can find a Mouthguard Center that will fit your child with a custom mouthguard, and the bonus is you don’t need to be a patient - so be sure to share with your child’s teammates! Our custom mouthguards are available in all colors, so your child can choose colors to match their school, intramural, or PAL league.

Celebrate Read Across America Day to Honor Dr. Seuss' Birthday!

"You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child."

Today, March 2, is a day about reading as it marks the 111th birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss. It is also deemed "Read Across America Day" by the National Education Association. Across the country thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers are participating by bringing together kids, teens, and books - and you can too!

Did you know, oral health problems cause students across the nation to miss 51 million school hours per year? Students who are absent miss crucial instruction time - especially in the early years when improving reading skills are a major focus. Be sure not only to encourage proper oral health habits but also reading in the home.

Here are proven techniques you can use to teach your child that reading is valuable and enjoyable, provided by the National Education Association:
  • Set a good example as a reader - let kids see you reading every day.
  • Get a subscription in your child’s name to an age-appropriate magazine. When relatives and others ask for gift ideas, suggest magazine subscriptions, books, or a book store gift certificate.
  • Don't fret if "Captain Underpants" has captivated your child rather than a more mature book. The great news here is that your child is reading! Encourage it and he or she is likely to move on to more sophisticated titles over time.
  • Keep lots of books, magazines, and newspapers around the house. Visit the library often and shop for books at garage sales and bookstores.
From brushing teeth to rockin' braces - visit our Pinterest page for books that are great for teaching your children about oral health.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s dental health, give any of our three locations a call. We specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment.
