Spring Cleaning: 5 Things to Throw Out

Now that spring has officially sprung, where are you in your spring cleaning process? If you haven’t yet started, don’t worry — there is still plenty of time!

Remember, when it comes to spring cleaning you’ll want to start small. Dedicate your energy to one room or space at a time — it’s always easier to tackle smaller tasks than an entire home in one shot.

As you start clearing the clutter, below are five items you can certainly look to toss!

  1. Magazines. Do you have a stack of magazines accumulating somewhere in your home? If so, chances are you don’t need them. If you can’t remember the last time you flipped through the pages, it’s time to drop the pile off at your local recycling center.
  2. Clothes. Instead of throwing out a perfectly good pair of jeans just because your child outgrew them, go the donation route. Goodwill happily accepts new or gently used items or consider scheduling a pickup with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island. Someone in need will thank you!
  3. Toys. Similar to the above, if you have any gently used toys your kids no longer play with — donate them! However, if you have broken toys or games with missing pieces, it may be time to retire them completely.
  4. Expired Items. From food to medicine, check expiration dates and toss anything that cannot be used. From there be sure to take inventory of missing items and add them to your next shopping list.
  5. Old Toothbrushes. We’ve hit the three month mark! If you replaced your toothbrush this New Year, now is the time to change it (again). Remember, old bristles hold on to bacteria and aren’t as effective in cleaning teeth.
Instead of just throwing out your old toothbrush, repurpose it! They make a great cleaning tool! Save a toothbrush to use for cleaning your delicate jewelry and another for cleaning those hard to reach spots in the bathroom.

How do you repurpose old toothbrushes? Share with us on our Facebook Page!

Understanding Special Needs Dentistry

Children with special needs need oral treatment much like anyone else; however they benefit most from seeing a dentist who caters explicitly to these patients. Often, special needs kids have special dental considerations; some are very susceptible to tooth decay; others require medication or a diet that is detrimental to dental health. Still, others find brushing and flossing to be difficult.

At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics, we're proud to have a team of doctors who are specially trained in providing dental care for handicapped and special healthcare needs patients!

A special needs dentist is specially trained to care for their patients with unique dental and developmental considerations. We understand how your child’s teeth may be affected and do everything we can to make your visit a positive experience. By visiting the same dentist for each appointment, your child will be able to bond and feel more comfortable every time.

Special Needs Considerations
In some cases, your child may not understand why exactly they are at the dentist or why it is important to stay still during their appointment. To be sure that your child’s dental work is done correctly and safely you may need to consider restraint or sedation. Before your appointment, our doctors will discuss the different methods that can be used to guarantee your child’s comfort. At this time, you may also want to discuss any medications, dietary restrictions, and any other habits your child has that may affect their teeth.

If you're looking for a special needs dentist on Long Island, we're only a phone call away! Now with FOUR locations, we specialize in caring for children's teeth in a comfortable and caring environment. Contact us today to learn more.

Flu Prevention Tips

The bad news? Cold and flu season is here. The good news? By instilling some good health habits, you and your family can help stop the spread of germs!

While the flu can affect anyone, it tends to hit the very young and the very old the hardest. For those with little ones or grandparents in the home, here’s how you can take action to fight the flu this season:

Wash your hands -- thoroughly! While this seems obvious, a quick rinse isn’t going to kill germs. To completely rid a virus from your skin, you must wash your hands in warm water with soap for 20 seconds or more. Be sure to scrub the backs of your hands and between your fingers well -- try singing “Happy Birthday” to yourself twice to meet the required length of time.

Avoid close contact. Try to keep your distance from others that may be sick. If you do come in close contact, be sure to wash your hands and avoid touching your nose, eyes, or mouth, as this is an easy way to spread unwanted germs.

Keep a healthy lifestyle. The healthier you are, the better your body is at defending the cold or flu! Be sure your family gets enough sleep, eats plenty of nutritious foods, and drinks lots of fluids!

Practice proper oral heath habits. Before and after brushing, be sure to wash your hands to prevent bacteria from entering your mouth. Also, never share your toothbrush with other family members and store all brushes separately to prevent airborne bacteria hoping from one brush to the next!

If you have any questions about how to better care for your child’s oral health, give any of our offices a call. Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dentistry has three convenient Long Island locations. We specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment. Don't forget to LIKE us on Facebook for updates and industry news!

Common Winter Mouth Woes

Winter may be chilly, but that shouldn’t stop all the fun! But sometimes, the mixture of the cool temperatures and harsh winds can wreak havoc on your little one and their mouth.

Feel free to enjoy the winter in as many ways as you can think of, but be aware of these common winter mouth woes in the process to ensure your child keeps smiling throughout the season.

Canker Sores
Those winter treats may taste great, but they don’t sit well in your mouth. The higher consumption of acidic foods in the winter is a recipe for canker sores. Of course, completely avoiding these holiday treats may be easier said than done. If your child winds up suffering, try swishing one teaspoon of salt and a half-cup of water to help clean the sores or contact us and inquire about our laser dentistry services!

Cold Sores
You don’t just need to protect yourself from the sun in the warmer months. Continue to use products with an SPF of 15 or higher, even in the winter, as exposure to sun can lead to cold sore breakouts. Additionally, make sure your child is getting a good night's rest and regularly keeping their hands clean to avoid the spread of any bacteria.

Teeth Sensitivity
Your child may feel a sharp pain while eating during the colder months of the year. Even if you take precautionary measures to avoid certain foods, the cold temperature and wind can be enough to leave their teeth feeling sore. Try brushing with a desensitizing toothpaste.

Chapped Lips
Exposure to wind, cold, and sun creates the perfect environment for dry lips. Make sure you and your little ones are wearing a daily SPF lip balm and apply it often throughout the day. Drink plenty of water and think about installing a humidifier in your rooms. A little extra moisture in the chillier months never hurts!

If you have any questions about how to improve your child's oral health please give our offices a call. We specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment. Visit our website to schedule an appointment at one of our three locations.

National Dental Hygiene Month FAQs

The month of October is National Dental Hygiene Month, which means it’s the perfect time to teach your child about dental hygiene -- and how a good dental care routine now will last throughout adult years later.

Here are the top pediatric dental hygiene questions, answered, so you and your child can feel confident with their oral care now and in the future.

What is the best way to brush your teeth?
  • Use a toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums.
  • Brush the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • Brush in gentle up-and-down strokes to clean the inside of the teeth.
  • To remove bacteria and freshen your breath, don’t forget to brush your tongue!
Need help getting your little ones to clean their chompers? Check out our tips and tricks here.

Is fluoride good or bad for children?
Too little or too much fluoride can both affect your child. Little to no fluoride will not help strengthen the teeth to fight against cavities. On the other hand, excessive fluoride can lead to dental fluorosis, which is a chalky white to brown discoloration of the permanent teeth.
TIP: Make sure your child uses the proper amount of fluoride toothpaste while brushing.

What is the right amount of fluoride for my child?
Fluoride has been shown to dramatically decrease a person's chances of getting cavities by making teeth stronger! As such, we recommend using fluoride toothpaste. If your child is younger than 3 years old, brush their teeth with an amount of fluoride toothpaste no larger than a grain of rice. Children, ages 3 to 6, should brush their teeth with a pea-sized amount. Once children are over the age of 6, ensure they are using fluoride properly and maintaining their dental care routine daily.
TIP: Teach your children right away how to spit out toothpaste rather than swallowing it.

How can I get rid of bad breath?
Halitosis, better known as bad breath, is caused by poor dental hygiene and plaque buildup. Remind your child to brush twice daily, floss, and rinse thoroughly in order to keep those mouth monsters away!

When should I take my child to the dentist?
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the first visit to the dentist should be by your child’s first birthday. After that, depending on the child, you should schedule follow-up visits with your dentist every six months. This allows you to have peace of mind knowing that your child’s teeth are developing properly with a clean dental bill-of-health!

To help your child maintain a healthy smile, make sure they keep up with their daily oral hygiene routine -- and, don’t forget to schedule your next appointment with the professionals at Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dentistry. We have three Long Island locations that specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment.

Fun Facts About the Tooth Fairy

Have you ever wondered where the Tooth Fairy came from? Or what she looks like? You’re not alone! In fact, the story of the Tooth Fairy varies depending on who you speak to.

While we don’t have all the answers, we did want to provide you with a few this National Tooth Fairy Day. See below for some fun facts about our fairy friend:
The Tooth Fairy is younger than you may think!
When it comes to American mythology, Santa can be traced to 280 CE, the Easter Bunny - the 1700s, however the very earliest reference of the Tooth Fairy wasn’t until 1908 when featured in the Chicago Daily Tribune!

Losing baby teeth has been long celebrated.
Although the concept of the Tooth Fairy is much more recent, the world has celebrated loosing baby teeth for centuries. In some cultures, the celebration involves throwing baby teeth on a roof or into the sky and asking for a new one! In other cultures, children were warned of the “tooth troll” who will come for them if they don’t brush.

But what does the Tooth Fairy look like?
The Tooth Fairy is certainly very elusive. Is she dainty, resembling Tinker Bell and carrying a wand? Or perhaps she is actually a he, like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in Tooth Fairy! Other cultures believe the Tooth Fairy is actually an animal, or that s/he employs animals to help (like Santa’s elves) — more on that below!

Sometimes, the Tooth Fairy is a little mouse!
With all the children across the world and all the missing teeth, it’s not surprising the Tooth Fairy may need some help. In parts of the world like South America and Asia, the Tooth Fairy has been known to send a little mouse to collect teeth — leaving a small treasure behind. Different areas of the world call him Ratón Perez or just little mouse. Instead of hiding the tooth under their pillow, children may put the tooth in a slipper or under their bed.

What does your household think of the Tooth Fairy? Share your thoughts with us on Facebook

Adelberg Montalvan specializes in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and welcoming environment, in three different Long Island locations. We understand that kids may fear the unknown, which is why we understand that what we do impacts a child's life forever – so we try to make things fun!

How Does Sugar Affect Teeth?

You hear it time and time again, eating too much sugar can lead to a cavity filled mouth — but exactly how does that happen? The sugar itself isn’t what causes damage, rather it’s the process of what happens to the sugar once consumed that does.

Learn more about the effect sugar has on teeth below.
How do you get cavities?

Your mouth is naturally full of bacteria, many of which are good for your oral health! Harmful bacteria comes into play when sugar is present. This bacteria feeds on the sugars in your mouth to create acids that destroy the protective outer layer of your teeth — known as tooth enamel. Cavities are created by these acids and without treatment can seriously hurt your tooth!

So, how can these acids be stopped?

Fortunately, there is a natural process of demineralization and remineralization (think of it as a tug-of-war) that occurs in the mouth. As these acids attack the important minerals in your tooth enamel (demineralization), your saliva plays a key role in their restoration (remineralization). Saliva contains minerals like calcium and phosphates that help repair teeth! But limiting your sugar intake is key to giving your saliva a chance to fix any damage.

How else can I help remineralize tooth enamel?

Aside from limiting sugar, stimulating saliva flow! This can be done by chewing sugar free gum or gum that is sweetened with xylitol. Also, incorporating more fibrous veggies and fruits into your diet can help bathe your teeth in saliva and thus, important minerals.

Milk, cheese, and other dairy products are good sources of calcium and phosphates as well. Finally, fluoride is another mineral that can repair weakened enamel so be sure to brush two minutes, twice a day with ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste.

Add regular dental visits with Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dentistry into the mix and your family has the best chance of winning the battle against tooth decay! With three convenient Long Island locations, we specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment. Contact us to request an appointment today!

Preparing for Your First Dental Visit with AMPD

New Year, New Smiles! As we focus on healthy habits for 2017, we want to make sure your dental health is top of mind - especially for little ones.

When it comes to tiny teeth, we (along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry) recommend a child’s first dental visit happen by age 1. If your child is at the age, here’s what you can expect during your first visit with us:

Meeting the Adelberg Montalvan team: Your child will meet with our staff to familiarize themselves and learn about what we do! We’ll answer any questions and provide demonstrations as needed. We’ll also meet with you - the parent - to review the medical/dental health history form.

The New Patient Exam! We encourage you to join your child in the room during the exam. This way, you are able to see how we work with your child and also allows us to discuss our findings directly with you. We’ll perform a thorough neck and head examination and evaluate your child’s teeth and gums. If no treatment is needed, we’ll make sure their tiny teeth are cleaned properly and provide a fluoride treatment! Note: X-rays are only taken if necessary, which we will discuss with you.

For more information, take a look at our YouTube video to learn more about infant oral exams and early intervention from Dr. Marc!

If you are a new patient to our practice, as a courtesy we’d love to extend you our offer of $105 off your new patient exam, cleaning and fluoride! This coupon is valid at any of our three Long Island locations. Contact us today and fill out the new patient form. We look forward to meeting you and your child for your first appointment!

Fun Facts About Dental History

Did you know a New Jersey dentist named William Lowell was credited with inventing a piece of equipment that changed the way golf was played? That’s right - Dr. Lowell actually whittled the first wooden golf tee using his dentistry tools!

It’s time to test your knowledge of dental history! How many of the facts below do you actually know?

Did you know…
Paul Revere, a symbol of the American Revolution - known for his famed midnight ride, was also a skilled maker of dentures! That’s right, Revere was actually a silversmith by trade and was able to use his craftsman skills to wire dentures made of animal teeth to his patients’ mouths!

The city of Burbank located in California was actually named after a New England Dentist - David Burbank (1823-1895). After joining others in the great migration west in the 1850’s, he amassed a huge landholding and became one of the largest and most successful sheep raisers in southern California! He was so successful, he soon stopped practicing dentistry to invest in real estate. After selling his property for a hefty profit, it was subdivided into small farms and residential lots and thus in 1887 the town of Burbank was born.

A Connecticut dentist, Dr. Washington Wentworth Sheffield, revolutionized the marketing and retailing of toothpaste by developing the collapsible metal tube. Prior to this, paste was often sold in glass or ceramic pots that the toothbrush would need to dip into. Looking for a more hygienic and convenient way to package his own toothpaste, he discovered artist paint tubes while vacationing in Europe. The Sheffield's Creme Dentrifrice packaging was such a hit that we even use a similar tube today!

Lucy Hobbs Taylor was the first American woman to receive a dental degree! After being denied admission to dental school, she opened her own practice in Iowa. Her practice was so profitable in the first three years that she earned herself an excellent reputation and the Ohio College of Dental Surgery admitted her as a student. Recognizing the success of her practice, Taylor was only required to complete one session before graduating with her degree.

Contrary to popular belief, George Washington’s dentures were NOT made of wood - rather lead and ivory. In fact, Washington actually had several dentures throughout his lifetime, ranging from materials of gold to steel to animal teeth!

For even more fun facts about dental history, check out this document from MouthHealthy.org!

If you have any questions about how to improve your child's oral health, please give our offices a call. We specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment. Visit our website to schedule an appointment at one of our three locations.

“Best best best dental office ever!! Not even a year ago my daughter was so nervous to go now she loves and looks forward to seeing Dr. Marc and his wonderful staff!” - Sophia T.

“I love Adelberg Montalvan! I have been bringing my two children (now 6 and 10 years old) for years! They love going to the dentist, the staff is friendly and the office is very clean and modern with an under the sea theme. My youngest used to be terrified and when she needed treatment, the doctor discussed with me all the different options on how to get the treatment done. During her procedure the doctor kept her calm and made jokes throughout the whole visit, making her feel at ease and happy. She no longer is afraid to go, they both get so excited when it's time for their checkups! I wouldn't want my children seen by any other practice!” - M.D.

“I wouldn't even dream of taking my son anywhere else! Completely trust Dr. Bennet and all the staff at Adelberg montalvan. Friendly, knowledgeable and aimed to please, every dental visit is an amazing experience for both kid and parent!” - Gavin P.

“Amazing!!!!! They took the time to explain everything and also the doctor was so patient with my 5 year old daughter who is very nervous during her cleaning.” Jacqueline S.

“I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter and she had a wonderful experience with Dr. Bennet and has been talking about the dentist since her visit. I would highly recommend them. Perfect for kids and nice atmosphere for all.” - Cara G.

Is your child suffering from cavities, canker sores, or even fever blisters? Certainly not ideal, but thankfully laser treatment can help. Laser technology allows dentists to perform procedures with less pain, noise, and fear, which means no more kicking and screaming! Sound enticing? We thought so.

Here are some other benefits of laser dentistry.

Safety: If used by a trained practitioner, this technology is just as safe as any other dental instrument. However, your child will need to wear special eyeglasses to protect their eyes from the laser.

Painless: With this treatment, your child will overall feel more comfortable before, during, and after their appointment. Dental procedures with laser beams are painless, which also means there is nothing to be afraid of - coming in for a visit will become a breeze (if it wasn’t already)!

Accuracy: It may be hard to believe, but the laser treatment process is almost perfect. Laser technology uses a very narrow beam of light, allowing the surrounding areas to be left untouched.

Controls Swelling and Bleeding: Since the treatment only touches the affected area, the accuracy of this technology also helps reduce swelling and bleeding. If you notice swelling after the procedure, apply ice to the affected area.

Limited Return Visits: Need multiple procedures performed? With laser treatment, everything can be done in one single visit. Know what that means? You get to save time and energy on multiple dental appointments, sounds like a win all around.

Volunteering on Long Island

The holiday season is upon us! And as we prepare to give thanks - and perhaps start some holiday shopping - remember that this is also the season for giving back. There are many opportunities on Long Island and it’s not just limited to adults - your children are more than welcome to join!

From food drop-offs to year round volunteer initiatives, below are some ways you and your children can give back to the local community this holiday season.
Long Island Pediatric Dentist

Long Island Cares has a Student Volunteer Corps which provides opportunities for middle and high school students to learn and participate in feeding and supporting the more than 316,000 Long Islanders who are hungry or food insecure. To have your child join the Student Volunteer Corps, complete this form. For more information on holiday volunteering opportunities, contact Alisha at 631-582-3663 or asummers@licares.org.
Important! Long Island Cares is in need of frozen turkeys this Thanksgiving. Drop offs are welcomed at their warehouse.
Warehouse location:
10 Davids Drive, Hauppauge, Monday-Friday, between 8am-4pm.
Drop off locations throughout the holiday season:
Party Hardy - 145 Smithtown Blvd., Nesconset.
Gino's Tuscany - 517 Main Street, Islip.

This is an organization that works to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. Both kids and adults can help out at community fairs, food drives, and other events. Their holiday program is called the Turkey and Trimmings Collection Campaign where you and your family can donate turkeys and holiday dry goods to help feed the hungry - from November 1 to December 30.
Drop off locations throughout the holiday season:
Roslyn Savings Bank - 719 Smithtown Bypass, Smithtown.
Bristal Assisted Living - 400 Country Line Rd., Massapequa.

At the Ronald Mcdonald House of Long Island, volunteers are the “Heartbeat of the House,” so they welcome volunteers of all ages. One specific service you and your little ones can participate in is their Little Hands Helping Little Hands program. This was specifically created for children between the ages of 6 and 16 to volunteer and help bake treats for the families staying at the Ronald Mcdonald House. Contact Betti McClellan, Director of Volunteers & Programs at 516-775-5683 or bmcclellan@rmhlongisland.org for more information.

United Way of Long Island has a project called Kids United Against Hunger which teaches kids about hunger and provides them with the opportunity to volunteer at The Harry Chapin Food Bank in Hauppauge. This program is available to students, ages 7-14 - parents, you can come too! For more information contact Jessica Rosati, United Way of Long Island at 631-940-3700 or jrosati@licares.org.

We encourage our patients to get into the holiday spirit by giving back to their local communities. Please tag us in any Instagram or Facebook posts showing how you are helping families in need throughout the season for a chance to win a special gift from Adelberg Montalvan!
