Pediatric Orthodontic FAQs

While you may know an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, did you know that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at age 7?

Are there other orthodontic questions you have in mind? Brace yourself - we have the answers:
Why should I choose an orthodontic specialist?
Teeth, and sometimes entire facial structures, are permanently changed by orthodontic treatment. It is important that the treatment be appropriate and properly completed. Orthodontic specialists have extensive and specialized training that enables them to provide their patients with professional, personalized treatments.

How do I schedule an appointment for an initial exam?
If you or your child can potentially benefit from orthodontic treatment, simply call our office, send us an e-mail or fill out our appointment request form online. We will be happy to schedule an appointment for you. When you call to schedule your appointment, our front office staff will request some basic information from you.

What will happen at the initial examination appointment?
Upon arriving, each patient and parent will be seen by the staff and doctor who will acclimate you to our office and prepare for the initial exam. We will take the necessary photographs and X-rays to allow us to make a proper diagnosis. The doctor will then complete a brief, but thorough, exam. To read more about your first visit, see our First Visit Page.

What will I learn from the initial examination?
There are five essential questions that we will cover during the initial examination:
Is there an orthodontic problem, and if so, what is it?
What must be done to correct the problem?
Will any teeth need to be removed?
How long will the treatment take to complete?
How much will the treatment cost?

Do braces hurt?
Generally, braces do not "hurt." After certain visits, teeth may be sore for a few days. In these situations, pain medications such as Advil or Tylenol will ease the discomfort. However, after most visits, patients do not feel any soreness at all! We often remind our patients, “It does not have to hurt to work!”

Can orthodontic correction occur while a child has baby teeth?

Yes. Some orthodontic problems are significant enough to require early intervention. However, if a patient is not yet ready for treatment, we will follow that patient's growth and development until the time is right for treatment to begin.

Smile Friendly Foods for Your Summer BBQ

May is National Barbecue Month - an unofficial holiday but still an exciting way to start the summer. In the spirit of dental health, we wanted to share some of the best and worst foods you should have at your next outdoor feast (like this Memorial Day Weekend perhaps!):

What to serve -

  • Fish: Fish is rich with omega-3 fatty acids which is not only great for fighting gum disease but also helps calm any inflammation surrounding irritated gums. Try grilling some salmon or trout soon!
  • Veggie Skewers: Nothing beats grilled veggie skewers, especially knowing they are an important part of a balanced diet and have been noted for decreasing tooth decay! Add some bell peppers, zucchini, cauliflower, and mushroom skewers to your next party menu.
  • Fruit: For a healthy, summer twist on dessert - throw some fruits on a skewer and grill them as well! As many fruits are good sources for vitamin C - they work to kill bacteria in the mouth.
What not to serve -
  • Chips and canned dip: Canned dips are full of unhealthy preservatives, additives, and sugars. While any major brand of potato chip is fried in oil with added preservatives. If chips are a must have, look into purchasing an all natural/whole grain brand.
  • BBQ sauce - Super sugary and sticky, eating foods covered in BBQ isn’t the most smile friendly.
  • Baked beans - While these may seem healthy, there’s actually a lot of sodium, sugar, and other unhealthy additives.
If you have any questions about how to improve your child's oral health please give our offices a call. We specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment. Call (516) 798-1111 or visit our website to schedule an appointment.

Invisalign Teen in Time for Summer!

With summer around the corner there’s plenty of talk of family vacations, day trips to the beach, or weekend BBQs. All of course, will likely be documented on Facebook or Instagram. However, if your kids are not feeling confident about their smiles - they may shy away from such photo opps.

Research shows that moms underestimate the extent to which teens feel sub-conscious about crooked teeth, and using braces as a solution can often make this lack of confidence even worse. But with Invisalign Teen, no one needs to know your teen is straightening their teeth, removing a potential source of real anxiety for them giving them the confidence to be themselves in front of everyone.

We want to make sure your teen starts their summer off flashing a smile that they are proud of - which is why we offer Invisalign Teen at our office! Since this orthodontic option involves aligners that are removable (and virtually invisible), teens not only can eat and drink what they want but continue to brush and floss normally to maintain healthy gums and teeth. Plus there are no wires, metal or brackets to cause mouth abrasions.

If you're seeking orthodontic treatment for your child, consult with one of our orthodontists here at Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental & Orthodontics. Ask us about Invisalign Teen and what it can do for your child.

Tips for Picture Perfect Prom Teeth

So you’ve had your promposal and found the perfect dress (or tux), seems like you’re just about ready for prom night, right? Well before you start snapping photos and piling into the limo, make sure you’re flashing the perfect prom smile.

With proms on the horizon across Long Island, we wanted to offer some pre-prom maintenance tips to ensure you have a picture perfect smile for the big night out:

  • Brushing: Maintain the basics: brushing twice a day for two minutes! Pair this with toothpaste containing fluoride to help strengthen tooth enamel.
  • Flossing: Floss at least once a day and don’t skip the back teeth. Flossing is essential for removing plaque build up between teeth where your toothbrush can’t always reach.
  • Rinsing: Choose a mouthwash that does more than just freshen breath, fluoride is essential for combating bacteria and decreasing the likelihood of cavities.
To really be sure your smile is up to par, schedule an appointment with us for a teeth cleaning before prom. This cleaning will help eliminate bad breath and make your teeth appear whiter by removing the surface stains! Bonus - if you’re a new patient to our practice, as a courtesy you will receive $100 OFF a new patient exam, cleaning, and fluoride with our coupon found on our website.

Give any of our 3 locations a call to schedule your appointment today! Don't forget to LIKE us on Facebook and Follow us on Twitter for updates and industry news.
