[INFOGRAPHIC] Tooth Friendly School Lunches

Did you know that over the course of your child’s school years (Pre-K through 12), you will have packed close to 3,000 lunch boxes? Smart snacks and proper nutrition are not only key to fueling your kids through the day but equally for keeping smiles healthy and bright.

Make sure this school year you pack some simple, tooth friendly alternatives! Check out our infographic and additional info below:

Pack less:

  • Cookies & Chips: Prepackaged treats such as these are often loaded with preservatives, sugars, and more.
  • Dried Fruits: Seems healthy, but dried fruits are like sticky candies. They can adhere to teeth for extended periods of time.
  • Juice & Soda: Sugary beverages and the acid in soda are known for weakening tooth enamel.
Pack more:
  • Fruits & Veggies: Crisp, water dense fruits and veggies are not only great for hydration - but they also help stimulate the production of saliva (which protects tooth enamel and prevents decay!)
  • Low-Fat Cheese: The casein protein found in cheese helps to fortify the tooth’s surface and protect against cavities. It’s low in sugar and acid, and high in calcium.
  • Nuts: Many nuts provide vitamins and minerals that help teeth!
  • Water: The best beverage for healthy teeth - even add some fruit slices to change its taste!

Start the School Year with a Smile

School supplies? Check. First day of school outfit? Check. Dentist appointment? Check!

School will be back in session in two weeks and as you finish up all of your back to school shopping, don’t forget to schedule that back to school dental appointment! We know that summer break can disrupt daily routines and as such its important to get back on track for a successful school year.

To make sure your child starts the school year off with a great smile, be sure to follow our tips below!
  • Schedule a check-up. Good health and academic success begin at home. It’s important as a parent, to make sure there are no obstacles in your child’s way that could hurt their ability to thrive. A twice yearly check up is your best defense to maximize your child’s oral health. Schedule a back to school appointment with us to make sure no dental problems will prevent them from having a happy and healthy year.
  • Protect tiny teeth. Back to school = back to school sports. One important piece of your child’s uniform that shouldn’t be forgotten, a custom fit mouthguard. Mouthguards are the simplest solution to dramatically reducing the risk of oral injuries and concussions. At all three of our locations, we offer our very own mouthguard centers so your athlete can receive a custom fit guard in the colors of their choosing. Current patients and first timers welcome!
  • Consistency is key. Make sure your child incorporates enough time in the morning and evening to brush and floss teeth. By making these actions routine, your child will develop consistent habits for the rest of their life!
  • Pack healthy lunches. When packing lunches for your kids this year make sure to include some tooth friendly options such as string cheese, raw veggies, whole wheat bread for sandwiches, water, etc. Smart snacks and proper nutrition not only play a role in your child’s oral health but also in fueling them through their daily activities.
Let us help make sure nothing is standing in the way of a successful school year - give us a call to schedule your child’s back to school check-ups and/or mouthguard fitting today!

Back to School Dental Care Tips

With only a few weeks of summer break left, now is the time to ease your kids into their back to school routine - including brushing up on dental health practices. Help them start the school year off with a smile with the below tips:

Schedule a dental visit. Adolescence is a time of great change in the mouth (losing baby teeth and gaining permanent teeth). Additionally, tooth decay is still the most common chronic childhood disease. As such, it’s important to keep up with preventative dental visits every six months to ensure your child is taking the necessary steps to ward off decay as well as protect their teeth throughout the year.

Be consistent. Both with flossing and brushing! Make sure your child incorporates enough time into their morning and evening schedule to brush and floss. By making these actions routine, your child will develop consistent habits for the rest of their life!

Pay attention to nutrition. When packing lunches, make sure you are choosing tooth friendly options. Also, be sure to include all necessary food groups, missing the daily servings of fruits and vegetables can increase cavity risk. Don’t forget about after school snacks - especially if your child is going from classes to after school activities.

Good health and academic success begin at home. It’s important as a parent, to make sure there are no obstacles in your child’s way that could hurt their ability to thrive. Schedule a back to school appointment with us to make sure no dental problems will prevent them from having a happy and healthy year! Help Your Kids Make the Grade for Dental Health

While enjoyable, the laid back pace of summer can often disrupt normal routines. With the first day of school around the corner, it’s time to start to transition your children back into their school year schedules (including establishing good dental habits).

As you know, a twice-yearly checkup is your child’s best defense against poor oral health; but, there are some dental habits that can begin at home! See below for some tips to help your kids ‘make the grade’ for dental health:

  • Get your kids used to brushing 2 minutes, twice a day - purchase a brushing timer, or download a brushing app to use to encourage them to spend the full amount of time brushing their teeth!
  • New school year, new toothbrushes! Be sure you swap the toothbrushes every three months to avoid buildup of germs and bacteria.
  • Help your child’s nutrition by packing health lunches and replacing soft drinks and juices with water to keep their sugar consumption low.
  • Get pending dental appointments, including fillings, out of the way before going back to school, to avoid missing class time during the school year. Schedule a visit with us today!
