Preparing for Your First Dental Visit with AMPD

New Year, New Smiles! As we focus on healthy habits for 2017, we want to make sure your dental health is top of mind - especially for little ones.

When it comes to tiny teeth, we (along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry) recommend a child’s first dental visit happen by age 1. If your child is at the age, here’s what you can expect during your first visit with us:

Meeting the Adelberg Montalvan team: Your child will meet with our staff to familiarize themselves and learn about what we do! We’ll answer any questions and provide demonstrations as needed. We’ll also meet with you - the parent - to review the medical/dental health history form.

The New Patient Exam! We encourage you to join your child in the room during the exam. This way, you are able to see how we work with your child and also allows us to discuss our findings directly with you. We’ll perform a thorough neck and head examination and evaluate your child’s teeth and gums. If no treatment is needed, we’ll make sure their tiny teeth are cleaned properly and provide a fluoride treatment! Note: X-rays are only taken if necessary, which we will discuss with you.

For more information, take a look at our YouTube video to learn more about infant oral exams and early intervention from Dr. Marc!

If you are a new patient to our practice, as a courtesy we’d love to extend you our offer of $105 off your new patient exam, cleaning and fluoride! This coupon is valid at any of our three Long Island locations. Contact us today and fill out the new patient form. We look forward to meeting you and your child for your first appointment!

Establishing Your Child's Dental Home with AMPD!

When it comes to your children’s health, you don’t skip doctor visits - so why skip dental visits? We can’t stress enough that establishing a dental “home” for your child at a young age is vital in preventing dental problems down the line.

Dental problems can begin earlier than you think. Children run the risk of severe tooth decay just from using a bottle during nap time or while sleeping overnight - as well as from continuously nursing from the breast. That’s why the earlier you schedule your dental visit - the better chance we have at early intervention plus assuring optimal oral health care for a lifetime!

At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental - we provide a warm, friendly environment, and treat your children the same way we treat our own! See what Dr. Marc Adelberg himself has to say about the importance of infant oral exams and early intervention services:

We (along with the AAPD) recommend your child’s first dental visit happen by their first birthday to ensure their teeth are erupting properly and that there are no dental abnormalities. Give any of our three offices a call today to schedule your child's first dental appointment!

Common Tooth Care Mistakes

Healthy diet, check. Routine dental visits, check. Brushing for two minutes, twice a day, check. While these are some of the best ways to prevent cavities, some parents may still be falling short when it comes to their child’s oral hygiene.

Are you making any of these easily correctable mistakes?

Letting your kids brush unsupervised. If you have small children in the house, don’t let them brush alone. It’s not that they don’t want to do a good job, they just physically may not have the proper motor skills to brush effectively yet.

Letting your child go to bed with a bottle. This is the quickest and easiest way to cause tooth decay? Giving your child a bottle or sippy cup all day long filled with milk or juice keeps sugar and bacteria levels in the mouth elevated at all times. Stick to water as often as possible.

Waiting to make the first dentist appointment. Your child’s first trip to the dentist should happen when the first tooth erupts or by their first birthday. Scheduling regular dental visits from the get go will also help establish your child’s dental home and get them comfortable - and even excited - to go each time.

Thinking cavities are no big deal. If a cavity becomes infected, it can affect the development of the adult teeth. If cavities at an early age go untreated they can lead to problems with speech articulation, trouble sleeping, even low self esteem and school performance.

Not using fluoride. Fluoride is a substance that helps teeth become stronger and resistant to decay. Regularly drinking water treated with fluoride in addition to brushing and flossing regularly ensures significantly lower cavities. If you have any questions regarding fluoride and your child, we encourage you to give us a call.

Children's Books to Overcome the Fear of the Dentist

Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics

As we know, some children are fearful or anxious about visiting the dentist for the first time. If your little one is one of them, don’t worry, there are quite a few tips on how to keep your child calm; one of them is as simple as bedtime reading.

We’ve recommended some of our favorite children’s books to help you get started:
It's time for Dora's checkup at the dentist. Dora explores the dentist's office, gets her teeth cleaned, and more! She even gets a special treat for being such a good patient!

The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist
Sister Bear watches Dr. Bearson fill Brother Bear's small cavity. Then it's her turn in the chair to have a dangling baby tooth removed. An entertaining story for preschoolers of a cheerful and informative visit to a dentist.

Just Going to the Dentist
Mercer Mayer's very popular Little Critter is on his way to the dentist. It's a thorough check-up, complete with dental x-rays. When Dr. Ghum insists on filling a cavity, Little Critter goes through it bravely.

Remember, parents can play a vital role in helping your child not be afraid of the dentist. Has you child experienced first time fears? What did you do to help calm the nerves? Share with us on our Facebook page!

How to Ease Your Child Into Going to the Dentist

Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics

We all know how scary it could be for children to take a trip to the dentist. For that reason, it is important to ease your child into dental visits. After all, there are unknown noises and objects, a stranger poking around inside their mouths, cold metal instruments and more.

Looking for tips on how to keep your child calm? See below for 8 tips from Parents Magazine to help your child overcome their fear of the dentist:

  1. Start Young - Baby's first dental visit should happen by their 1st birthday (or when the first tooth is visible). This will provide your child with a 'dental home' where they can be comfortable
  2. Keep It Simple - Try not to include too many details when preparing for a visit. You may want to avoid saying 'everything will be fine' in case a treatment is needed. Then the child might lose trust in both the dentist and you
  3. Watch Your Words - Avoid using words that can scare children (hurt, pain, shot). The dental staff will introduce their own vocabulary to children to help get them through difficult situations
  4. Consider a Pretend Visit - Have a pretend visit in your own home, where you are the dentist. Get your child familiar with the routine before you go. Picture books with detailed illustrations and easy language is a huge help too
  5. Do Not Try To Relate - Avoid taking children to an adult office, it can give the wrong impression. Pediatric dental offices are kid friendly, with games, fun photos, and movies kids can enjoy
  6. Prepare For Some Fussing - It's normal for little ones to be fussy. Pediatric dentists are well versed in these situations. Let the dentist and their staff guide you
  7. Avoid Bribery - You don't want to promise your child a lollipop for not fussing or crying. That may make your child think something bad will happen if they should be worried about fussing or crying. Not to mention it sends the wrong message after the dentist talks about healthy teeth and avoiding sweets. Encouragement for good behavior is a better way to go
  8. Emphasize The Importance Of Good Oral Hygiene - Teach your child that dentist visits are a necessity, not a choice, and that the dentist will take care of their teeth so they stay strong and healthy

In addition to the above, make sure you find the right pediatric dentist for your child. At Adelberg and Montalvan we are well prepared for a child's first dental visit. For more information, check us out on the web or our Facebook page. We hope to see you soon!
