School Smarts: Preparing for Fall Sports

Sports are a big part of going back to school - both intramural and team play. They are also a common source of youth injuries. Some of the most common injuries children are at risk for are trauma-related, meaning proper warm-ups and stretching isn’t going to prevent them.

So what’s the best way to reduce injury risk? By making sure your child follows the below steps:

Wear protective gear. Each sport comes with different gear requirements, most commonly helmets and mouth guards. It’s important these items are included as part of your child’s uniform! Also check to see what else may be needed, protective padding/guards, or specific footwear.

Know the rules. Much like drivers know and follow the rules of the road it’s important your child understands the rules of the game. As long as all players know the rules, they know what to expect from each other. If the sport involves following plays, make sure your child understands their particular role in each situation - better chance they’ll be out of harms way.

Look out for others. Encourage your child to communicate on the field and watch out for their teammates. For instance in baseball or volleyball, a player may yell “I got it” or “Mine” to avoid collisions with other players. It’s also important your child pays attention to the coach - they’re the ones helping to keep the team safe.

As mentioned above, mouth guards are one of the most important pieces of sports equipment your child needs to stay safe. They are a simple solution that helps to dramatically reduce the risk of oral injuries and concussions.

At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, we offer our very own mouth guard centers so your athlete can receive a custom fit mouth guard (in colors of their choosing). Custom fit mouth guards are unique to an athlete’s mouth, they mold the teeth perfectly and allow for normal speech and breathing. Please come by any of our 3 locations before fall sport season to be sure a mouth guard is included as part of their uniform!

Back to School Dental Care Tips

With only a few weeks of summer break left, now is the time to ease your kids into their back to school routine - including brushing up on dental health practices. Help them start the school year off with a smile with the below tips:

Schedule a dental visit. Adolescence is a time of great change in the mouth (losing baby teeth and gaining permanent teeth). Additionally, tooth decay is still the most common chronic childhood disease. As such, it’s important to keep up with preventative dental visits every six months to ensure your child is taking the necessary steps to ward off decay as well as protect their teeth throughout the year.

Be consistent. Both with flossing and brushing! Make sure your child incorporates enough time into their morning and evening schedule to brush and floss. By making these actions routine, your child will develop consistent habits for the rest of their life!

Pay attention to nutrition. When packing lunches, make sure you are choosing tooth friendly options. Also, be sure to include all necessary food groups, missing the daily servings of fruits and vegetables can increase cavity risk. Don’t forget about after school snacks - especially if your child is going from classes to after school activities.

Good health and academic success begin at home. It’s important as a parent, to make sure there are no obstacles in your child’s way that could hurt their ability to thrive. Schedule a back to school appointment with us to make sure no dental problems will prevent them from having a happy and healthy year! Call (516) 798-1111 or visit our website to schedule an appointment.

How to Get Your Little Ones Brushing

Getting your young one on the road to a lifetime of healthy smiles may not be an easy feat. That’s why it’s best to start teaching the importance of dental care early on. See below for some tips to help get your kids brushing - and have fun while doing it!

Start early. First, work together to create a clear dental routine - and stick to it! Reinforce the importance of brushing for two minutes twice daily to keep mouth monsters away!

Show and tell with a toothbrush. Demonstrate how you brush your teeth, show your child how to brush in circles and how to reach all of the teeth in the mouth.

Give them a choice. Toothbrushes and toothpastes come in a variety of styles and flavors. Let your child choose which tooth tools they’d like to use, perhaps one with their favorite colors or cartoon characters.

Make brushing fun. Download a fun brushing app - like Brush DJ - to your smart phone to use when it’s time to clean those tiny teeth. Brush along side of your child to their favorite tunes until the 2 minute song is up!

Compliment your child’s brushing. Use positive reinforcement to get your child in the brushing habit. Create a sticker chart and add stickers for brushing and flossing daily.
