Reasons To Get a Custom Fit Mouth Guard

When it comes to sports (competitive or recreational), safety is of utmost concern -- and mouth guards are one of the most important pieces of sports equipment your child needs to stay safe!

In fact, according to the American Dental Association, an athlete is 60 times more likely to suffer harm to the teeth if they aren't wearing a mouth guard.

Mouth guards are essential in helping to minimize the risk of broken teeth and injuries to the lips, tongue, face, or jaw during play.

But with all the options out there - how do you choose which is best for your child? Consider the facts:
  • While less expensive, generic boil-and-bite mouth guards can restrict breathing and speech. Additionally, they are difficult to adapt to orthodontic appliances. Custom mouth guards, however, are designed to uniquely fit in an athletes mouth, with no interference with speech or breathing.
  • Does your child have braces? A custom fit guard can give them the protection and comfort they need in a mouthpiece.
  • Custom guards are designed for optimal oxygen flow while providing the most protection and comfort. This helps an athlete enhance their performance and endurance on the field.
  • Stock guards cannot be modified to fit an individual’s mouth and can only stay in place when the mouth is closed. Custom fit guards are made from an impression of the athlete’s mouth taken at a dentist’s office.
While any mouth guard is better than no mouth guard, we encourage you to look into the custom fit option for your athlete. At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, we offer our very own Mouth Guard Center for this exact reason. We will fit your child with a mouth guard specific to their mouth, and they can choose their colors to coincide with their school, intramural, or PAL league’s uniform. Contact us at any of our three locations today for more information!

Spring Sports Safety: Custom Mouth Guards

Spring is officially here! And with the new season comes blooming flowers, warmer weather and of course, spring sports! As your children get ready to head outdoors, be sure to schedule an appointment with Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental for a custom fit mouth guard!

Just like you wouldn’t let your child go up to bat without a helmet or run onto the field without shin guards, mouth guards are critical for protecting your child’s smile!

Here’s how spring sports can hurt your child’s teeth:

Baseball and Softball — One of the biggest threats to the mouth is the ball itself. The impact of a ball can knock out or chip a tooth, or in other cases, misalign a jaw!

Lacrosse — The good thing here is that both girls and boys lacrosse requires the use of a mouth guard to even be allowed to play! But even during a friendly game of lacrosse catch on the weekend, one should not skip the mouth guard. Much like the above, an accidental ball to the mouth is always a possibility.

Soccer — Close plays can lead to elbows or knees to the face as well as falls to the ground! If the chin or mouth is hit in the wrong way, a mouth guard can help protect chipped teeth or cuts.

Why are custom fit mouth guards the best choice?

Well, let’s face it — any mouth guard is better than NO mouth guard, but custom mouth guards truly work best. Here’s why!

Consider this, if a helmet is too loose on your child’s head, it’s not really offering the protection it should — if anything it is decreasing it’s effectiveness! Store bought, generic guards function in a similar way. With custom fit mouth guards from Adelberg Montalvan, each guard we create is done off of a mold of your child’s mouth. That means they are completely unique to their owner. By fitting your child’s mouth perfectly, they offer optimal protection (even for those with braces!).

When a mouth guard is unique to an athlete’s mouth, it offers optimal comfort. The more comfortable something is, the more likely your child will be to wear it! And since all sports require some level of communication, a comfortable, proper fitting guard won’t restrict speech.

To help make custom fit mouth guards more accessible, we offer a dedicated Mouth Guard Center at each of our locations! We can fit your child with a custom guard, in any color or design and the bonus is you don’t need to be a patient — so be sure to share with your child’s teammates!

Have we convinced you yet? Feel free to give any of our three Long Island locations a call, we’d be happy to answer any further questions!

National Facial Protection Month

This month is National Facial Protection Month and we’re here to remind you just how important it is to wear a mouthguard during sports.

Did you know an athlete is 60 times more likely to suffer harm to the teeth if they are not wearing a mouthguard? And that a mouthguard should be worn during all sports - not just those that are high collision or contact.

Help your children protect their teeth and faces from injury with these tips!

Wear a mouthguard. There are three types of mouthguards available: custom made, boil and bite, and stock guards. Of course any mouthguard is better than NO mouthguard, but we do recommend receiving a custom made one from us. These provide optimum protection as they are made uniquely for your child’s mouth.

Wear a helmet. Helmets are key in helping to prevent serious damage to the head. When choosing a helmet, it’s important to select one specific to the activity at hand. For example, football helmets are made to absorb multiple impacts, skate boarding helmets are designed to absorb high-speed impacts, etc.

Wear protective gear. This includes any necessary eyewear, face shields, and sport specific gear like shin guards for soccer, jockstrap, knee/elbow/shoulder pads, gloves, etc. Protective gear is important to help maintain the overall safety of an athlete participating in a certain sport.

If you’re looking for a mouthguard for your child, look no further. At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, we offer our very own mouthguard centers so your athlete can receive a custom fit mouth guard. Please come by any of our 3 locations before your child’s next game to be sure a mouthguard is included as part of their uniform!

School Smarts: Preparing for Fall Sports

Sports are a big part of going back to school - both intramural and team play. They are also a common source of youth injuries. Some of the most common injuries children are at risk for are trauma-related, meaning proper warm-ups and stretching isn’t going to prevent them.

So what’s the best way to reduce injury risk? By making sure your child follows the below steps:

Wear protective gear. Each sport comes with different gear requirements, most commonly helmets and mouth guards. It’s important these items are included as part of your child’s uniform! Also check to see what else may be needed, protective padding/guards, or specific footwear.

Know the rules. Much like drivers know and follow the rules of the road it’s important your child understands the rules of the game. As long as all players know the rules, they know what to expect from each other. If the sport involves following plays, make sure your child understands their particular role in each situation - better chance they’ll be out of harms way.

Look out for others. Encourage your child to communicate on the field and watch out for their teammates. For instance in baseball or volleyball, a player may yell “I got it” or “Mine” to avoid collisions with other players. It’s also important your child pays attention to the coach - they’re the ones helping to keep the team safe.

As mentioned above, mouth guards are one of the most important pieces of sports equipment your child needs to stay safe. They are a simple solution that helps to dramatically reduce the risk of oral injuries and concussions.

At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, we offer our very own mouth guard centers so your athlete can receive a custom fit mouth guard (in colors of their choosing). Custom fit mouth guards are unique to an athlete’s mouth, they mold the teeth perfectly and allow for normal speech and breathing. Please come by any of our 3 locations before fall sport season to be sure a mouth guard is included as part of their uniform!

Sports Safety Tips for National Facial Protection Month

Calling all MVPs, intramural enthusiasts, coaches, teachers, and parents - April is National Facial Protection Month! As such, we want to remind everyone to play it safe during recreational and organized sports to help in preventing serious, painful facial injuries that can take the fun (and the athlete) out of the game.

See below for some sports safety tips to keep in mind now, and always:

  • Mouth guards are a MUST. Compared to the cost of repairing an injury, mouth guards are significantly less expensive.
  • Always Wear a Helmet. Helmets help to absorb the energy of an impact and can help prevent serious damage to the head.
  • Use Protective Eyewear. Eyes are extremely vulnerable to damage, especially when sports come into play.
  • Wear a Face Shield. Face shields save the skin and prevent other severe facial damage that can come from hockey pucks, footballs, and racquetballs.
At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, we offer our very own mouth guard centers so your athlete can receive a custom fit mouth guard. Custom fit mouth guards are specific to an athlete’s mouth, they mold the teeth perfectly and allow for normal speech and breathing. Plus your child will have the opportunity to pick their own colors, whether for their school, intramural, or PAL league!

Please come by any of our 3 locations before your child’s next game to be sure a mouth guard is included as part of their uniform!

FAQ - Mouthguard Center of Long Island

As you know, we’ve recently announced the addition of the Mouthguard Center in each of our offices. Naturally, there’s been a few common questions that have come up. For our answers to these frequently asked questions, please see below:

Do we need an appointment?
Yes, please call the office you plan to come in to let them know. These "appointments" are quickly accommodated and shorter than a regular dental visit!

Can we get the impression taken at my child’s hygiene visit?

Of course! If your child is not a regular patient of ours they are still able to receive an impression/mouthguard during their visit.

What’s the price range?
Mouthguard’s are $80+ (depending on specifics). Please keep in mind these mouthguards last longer than store bought and if your child had one made previously they will be less expensive if you have your mold.
Mouthguards should be an extension of your child’s uniform. Much like you purchase appropriate footwear to protect against injuries, mouth guards are necessary in preventing dental injuries AND concussions.

Do you offer team discounts?
We do! Please call our offices directly for more information.

Can we customize the mouthguard to fit our team’s colors?
Absolutely! Your child will have the opportunity to pick their own colors - whether for their school, intramural. or PAL leagues!

How many kinds of mouthguards are there?
There are three main types of mouthguards on the market: custom made, boil and bite/self fit, and stock mouthguards. It’s important to choose a mouthguard that is resilient, comfortable, fits properly, and does not restrict breathing or your child’s speech. Of the three kinds, having an individually designed custom mouthguard provides optimum protection and improved performance. Learn more in our blog post here »

What happens if my child loses their mouthguard? Can it be replaced?
You will be given your custom mold to keep. As long as this can be used to re-fabricate the mouthguard, the second one will be done at 50% off.

How do we clean the mouthguard?
When you come in to pick up your mouthguard we will be providing a set of care instructions, but some other tips include:
  • Clean your mouthguard by washing it with soap and warm (not hot) water.
  • Soak your mouthguard in mouthwash prior to storing.
  • Keep your mouthguard in a well-ventilated plastic storage box when not in use. Make sure the box has several holes so the mouthguard will dry.
  • Don't leave your mouthguard in direct sunlight or in a closed automobile - heat can cause damage.
  • Careful not to bend your mouthguard when storing.
  • Don't handle or wear someone else's mouthguard.
Do you still have a question different from the above? Please let us know on our FACEBOOK page - we'll be sure to get back to you!
