It’s no surprise that kids (and adults) fear the dentist. With all the equipment and procedures, not to mention references in pop culture, it can certainly be a little intimidating. But we don’t want you or your children to feel afraid!
That’s why we teamed up with NYMetro Parents in honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month to help demystify the dentist – so you know what you can expect during your visit with us.
Routine dental visits (every six months) help us gauge your child’s overall dental health. During this time, your child’s teeth will be cleaned, we’ll review proper brushing and flossing techniques, discuss oral hygiene and apply a topical fluoride treatment to protect against cavities. This is also the time for us to spot potential problems early, so that your child will need minimal interventions later in life. As Dr. Marc states in the article, “Parents should get [their kids] to the dentist early so we can help treat and coach them at an early age.”
X-rays are sometimes needed to spot things the eye can’t see. These X-rays take images of your child’s jaw and tooth structure and can show us if there are any cavities or abnormalities. They also help us track teeth progression. At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, we take radiation dosages very seriously and even have digital X-ray machines. These machines allow for over a 50 percent reduction of radiation exposure and produce instant, high-quality images for our viewing. Learn more about our holistic dentistry services here!
Fillings are needed when a cavity is found, to fill the hole and block bacteria. Our tooth-colored composite fillings can be done in one visit! Once the decay is removed, the tooth is filled with the composite material which immediately hardens.
For further insight into laser treatment and braces, be sure to check out the full article, below!
Adelberg Montalvan specializes in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and welcoming environment, in three different Long Island locations. We understand that kids may fear the unknown, which is why we understand that what we do impacts the child's life forever – so we try to make things fun!

Back to School Dental Care Tips
With only a few weeks of summer break left, now is the time to ease your kids into their back to school routine - including brushing up on dental health practices. Help them start the school year off with a smile with the below tips:
Schedule a dental visit. Adolescence is a time of great change in the mouth (losing baby teeth and gaining permanent teeth). Additionally, tooth decay is still the most common chronic childhood disease. As such, it’s important to keep up with preventative dental visits every six months to ensure your child is taking the necessary steps to ward off decay as well as protect their teeth throughout the year.
Be consistent. Both with flossing and brushing! Make sure your child incorporates enough time into their morning and evening schedule to brush and floss. By making these actions routine, your child will develop consistent habits for the rest of their life!
Pay attention to nutrition. When packing lunches, make sure you are choosing tooth friendly options. Also, be sure to include all necessary food groups, missing the daily servings of fruits and vegetables can increase cavity risk. Don’t forget about after school snacks - especially if your child is going from classes to after school activities.
Good health and academic success begin at home. It’s important as a parent, to make sure there are no obstacles in your child’s way that could hurt their ability to thrive. Schedule a back to school appointment with us to make sure no dental problems will prevent them from having a happy and healthy year! Call (516) 798-1111 or visit our website to schedule an appointment.

Fighting Bad Breath Naturally
As adults, bad breath is something we are all aware of, but did you know children can have halitosis too?
What is halitosis (bad breath)?
At least 90% of bad breath cases are due to poor dental hygiene. As we eat, food is broken down by the bacteria that naturally lives in our mouths. As the food and proteins are broken down they release a gas - this gas, hydrogen sulfide vapors, is smelly.
The most common cause of halitosis in children is due to plaque buildup and poor dental hygiene. It can be difficult to ensure your children are brushing, flossing, and rinsing thoroughly each time, and missed brushings leave the mouth primed for the bad breath bacteria to begin to multiply. So we have some tips to help fight bad breath naturally:

It can be difficult to ensure your children are brushing, flossing, and rinsing thoroughly each time, and missed brushings leave the mouth primed for the bad breath bacteria to begin to multiply. So we have some tips to help fight bad breath naturally:
- Choose toothpaste with Xylitol - Nature’s secret weapon, xylitol can be found in many of the fruits and vegetables we eat everyday. Xylitol aids in preventing bacteria from sticking to the teeth and works to keep saliva at a more neutral pH level. Xylitol for dental use can be found in many children’s toothpastes, mouthwashes, and as a chewing gum.
- Stick to water - Encourage your child to drink more water throughout the day to help remove particles stuck between teeth as well as boost saliva production.
- Clean between teeth daily - Many areas of the mouth are somewhat self-cleansing, however the greatest entrapment area is in between the teeth. Food debris and bacteria accumulating over time will not only cause bad breath odors but can also contribute to inflammation.
- Don’t forget about the tongue - Teach your children to brush their entire tongue each time they brush their teeth. Clinical studies have shown that brushing the tongue significantly reduces and removes oral bacteria.
