Best Time to Start Orthodontic Treatment

Although an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at age 7. At this young age, the first adult molars erupt - thus establishing the back bite. During this time, we can evaluate front to back and side to side tooth relationships to see if there may be a possible overbite, open bite, crowding, or gummy smiles.

By having your child seek early evaluation, we not only will be able to detect any future problems but also intercept them and anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment. This includes:

  • Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
  • Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
  • Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Preserving space for unerupted teeth
  • Reducing the need for tooth removal
  • Reducing treatment time with braces
Interceptive treatment prevents serious problems from occurring later in life.
