Help Your Kids Make the Grade for Dental Health

While enjoyable, the laid back pace of summer can often disrupt normal routines. With the first day of school around the corner, it’s time to start to transition your children back into their school year schedules (including establishing good dental habits).

As you know, a twice-yearly checkup is your child’s best defense against poor oral health; but, there are some dental habits that can begin at home! See below for some tips to help your kids ‘make the grade’ for dental health:

  • Get your kids used to brushing 2 minutes, twice a day - purchase a brushing timer, or download a brushing app to use to encourage them to spend the full amount of time brushing their teeth!
  • New school year, new toothbrushes! Be sure you swap the toothbrushes every three months to avoid buildup of germs and bacteria.
  • Help your child’s nutrition by packing health lunches and replacing soft drinks and juices with water to keep their sugar consumption low.
  • Get pending dental appointments, including fillings, out of the way before going back to school, to avoid missing class time during the school year. Schedule a visit with us today!

We specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment. Call (516) 798-1111 or visit our website to schedule an appointment.

Important Teeth Terms

Caring for your children’s teeth is essential for starting them on the right to path to good oral health. If you’re uncertain of some words we’ve used during your appointments or on phone calls, we’re here to help you brush up on your vocab.

See the below important teeth terms everyone should know:

Primary Teeth: You may have heard the term primary teeth, milk teeth, or deciduous teeth, but most commonly - baby teeth. Around age 6 most children will lose their baby teeth and the permanent, adult teeth will come in.

Anesthesia: This kind of pain numbing medication is applied ‘locally’ - only to the area that needs numbing. A local anesthetic may be used while filing cavities or other minor procedures. For serious surgeries, general anesthesia may be required - which produces partial or complete unconsciousness

Gingivitis: Triggered by bacteria inside the mouth, gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. Gingivitis causes inflammation of the gum around the roots of the teeth and if the connective matter around the teeth is damaged, it may progress to tooth loss.

Fixed Appliances: This is another term used to describe semi-permanent devices attached to the teeth, like braces. Traditional braces are bonded to the front of the teeth to fix alignment problems.

For a full glossary of dental terms, visit our website here »

If you have more questions or concerns about teeth terms give us a call! We have three different Long Island locations and specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment. Call (516) 798-1111 or visit our website to schedule an appointment.

Brush Up on Your Brushing & Flossing!

Do YOU know the proper way to brush and floss your teeth? Often times when parents don’t, they end up teaching their young wrongs the wrong way to brush thus forming poor dental habits. Not sure if this rings true in your household? See below to brush up on how to brush your teeth:
Brushing Rules:
  • Keep the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle towards the gums
  • Use a gentle circular motion while brushing
  • Clean all surfaces of the teeth including the front, back, and top
  • Brush tongue to remove any bacteria that could cause bad breath
  • Avoid vigorous or harsh scrubbing, this can irritate the gums
  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and before bed
  • Brush your child’s teeth twice a day until they are old enough to do it on their own
When it comes to your children’s teeth, taking care of them properly depends on what age group you’re dealing with. At birth clean your child’s gums with a soft cloth and water. When their teeth start to show, brush them with a soft bristled toothbrush. Children under the age of two should use a small “smear” of toothpaste and for the ages 2-5, use a “pea-size” amount of toothpaste. Use ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste and urge them not to swallow it but instead spit or rinse.
Flossing is just as important in the fight against gum disease and tooth loss. Flossing removes plaque between teeth and under the gum line where a toothbrush may have problems reaching. To get the maximum benefits from flossing, use the below technique:
Flossing Rules:
  • Should begin when any two teeth have begun to touch
  • Break off about 18 inches of floss and wind the floss around your two middle fingers
  • Hold the floss tightly between thumb and forefingers with an inch of floss in between
  • Gently guide floss between teeth but do not jerk or snap floss into the gums (this can cause bleeding and damage to occur)
  • When the floss reaches the gum line, curve the floss into a C-shape against the tooth
  • Be sure to Supervise your child’s brushing and flossing until they are 7-8 years old

Why Should a Malocclusion Be Treated?

What is malocclusion of the teeth? Since occlusion refers to the ideal alignment of your teeth, malocclusion refers to the misalignment. If the teeth are misaligned, they will not be able to perform the vital functions necessary, leading to health problems.

Even though malocclusion is mostly hereditary, poor oral habits such as thumb sucking, bad dental care, prolonged bottle feeding or pacifier use can contribute to the problem. Ignoring malocclusion and the health of your child’s teeth can cause a variety of problems, such as:

·      Discomfort when chewing or biting

·      Speech problems (ie: developing a lisp)

·      Alteration of the appearance of the face

·      Breathing through the mouth rather than the nose

·      More difficulty brushing and flossing, leading to tooth decay or gum disease

Malocclusion is the most common reason for referral to an orthodontist; very few people have perfect teeth alignment. However, most problems are minor and do not require treatment if spotted early. If you’re realizing this is effecting your child, please schedule an appointment with us!

Consult with one of our orthodontists here at Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental & Orthodontics for your child’s first orthodontist appointment. Let us help you identify and reduce problems early on to make sure your child’s orthodontic experience is easier in the long run! Call us today!
