Volunteering on Long Island

The holiday season is upon us! And as we prepare to give thanks - and perhaps start some holiday shopping - remember that this is also the season for giving back. There are many opportunities on Long Island and it’s not just limited to adults - your children are more than welcome to join!

From food drop-offs to year round volunteer initiatives, below are some ways you and your children can give back to the local community this holiday season.
Long Island Pediatric Dentist

Long Island Cares has a Student Volunteer Corps which provides opportunities for middle and high school students to learn and participate in feeding and supporting the more than 316,000 Long Islanders who are hungry or food insecure. To have your child join the Student Volunteer Corps, complete this form. For more information on holiday volunteering opportunities, contact Alisha at 631-582-3663 or asummers@licares.org.
Important! Long Island Cares is in need of frozen turkeys this Thanksgiving. Drop offs are welcomed at their warehouse.

Drop off locations throughout the holiday season:
Party Hardy - 145 Smithtown Blvd., Nesconset.
Gino's Tuscany - 517 Main Street, Islip.

This is an organization that works to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. Both kids and adults can help out at community fairs, food drives, and other events. Their holiday program is called the Turkey and Trimmings Collection Campaign where you and your family can donate turkeys and holiday dry goods to help feed the hungry - from November 1 to December 30.
Drop off locations throughout the holiday season:
Roslyn Savings Bank - 719 Smithtown Bypass, Smithtown.

At the Ronald Mcdonald House of Long Island, volunteers are the “Heartbeat of the House,” so they welcome volunteers of all ages. One specific service you and your little ones can participate in is their Little Hands Helping Little Hands program. This was specifically created for children between the ages of 6 and 16 to volunteer and help bake treats for the families staying at the Ronald Mcdonald House. Contact Betti McClellan, Director of Volunteers & Programs at 516-775-5683 or bmcclellan@rmhlongisland.org for more information.

United Way of Long Island has a project called Kids United Against Hunger which teaches kids about hunger and provides them with the opportunity to volunteer at The Harry Chapin Food Bank in Hauppauge.
