We Want to Thank YOU!

Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics

We want to give a huge THANK YOU to all of our patients, friends, and family who took part in our fundraiser this year for Stony Brook Long Island Children's Hospital. Thanks to you we raised $15,3000 in honor of 3-year-old Landen Bohle who was diagnosed with leukemia late last fall.
Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental
Many of you know Meghann Bohle, Landen's mother and also dental hygienist for our practice. Once we learned of Landen's diagnosis we knew we wanted to help and support Landen and other children diagnosed with childhood cancer in any way we could. Coincidentally, Stony Brook came to us looking to do fundraising for their children's hospital; we knew this was the perfect opportunity to blend support for both causes.

We couldn't have done this without you, from the donations in our offices, through Facebook, and our "Team Landen" Long Island Marathon and 5K Race runners, thank you so much for contributing.
“They are not only helping my child now, but they are helping children of the future who will be diagnosed with leukemia and other terrible disease,” said Landen’s mother, Meghann Bohle. “It was incredibly touching they are going to do this in honor of my son.” - via Smithtown Patch

Importance of Water and Your Child's Teeth

Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics

Although fruit juices are often used as a soda substitute for children to avoid tooth decay, they may actually cause more harm than good. Juices are indeed more nutritious, however their acidity causes damage to tooth enamel.

So what should your kids be drinking instead? Water, especially fluoridated water, is best for kids teeth. Fluoride exists naturally in water sources and helps prevent and reverse the early stages of tooth decay. It even allows teeth damaged by acid to repair or remineralize themselves.

So ditch the acidic drinks and get your kids into the habit of drinking water. See below for some tips to getting your kids excited about water:

Start The Summer Off With a Great Smile!

Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment is simple, convenient, and affordable for patients of all ages. Not only will orthodontics visually improve your appearance, but it will also give you better oral health and proper oral function.

Although orthodontists can enhance a smile at any age, the optimal time period to begin treatment is age 7. During this time, the first adult molars erupt, establishing the back bite; with this in place, an orthodontist can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships.

So what happens when braces are needed? Thanks to today's technology, patients now have more options when it comes to wearing braces. While regular metal braces are still widely used, clear braces are becoming increasingly popular.

See below for the braces we offer here at Adelberg and Montalvan:

If braces are needed for your child contact us today to learn more about what we have to offer, including our SUMMER SPECIAL of $500 off Invisalign Braces.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon!

How to Ease Your Child Into Going to the Dentist

Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics

We all know how scary it could be for children to take a trip to the dentist. For that reason, it is important to ease your child into dental visits. After all, there are unknown noises and objects, a stranger poking around inside their mouths, cold metal instruments and more.

Looking for tips on how to keep your child calm? See below for 8 tips from Parents Magazine to help your child overcome their fear of the dentist:

  1. Start Young - Baby's first dental visit should happen by their 1st birthday (or when the first tooth is visible). This will provide your child with a 'dental home' where they can be comfortable
  2. Keep It Simple - Try not to include too many details when preparing for a visit. You may want to avoid saying 'everything will be fine' in case a treatment is needed. Then the child might lose trust in both the dentist and you
  3. Watch Your Words - Avoid using words that can scare children (hurt, pain, shot). The dental staff will introduce their own vocabulary to children to help get them through difficult situations
  4. Consider a Pretend Visit - Have a pretend visit in your own home, where you are the dentist. Get your child familiar with the routine before you go. Picture books with detailed illustrations and easy language is a huge help too
  5. Do Not Try To Relate - Avoid taking children to an adult office, it can give the wrong impression. Pediatric dental offices are kid friendly, with games, fun photos, and movies kids can enjoy
  6. Prepare For Some Fussing - It's normal for little ones to be fussy. Pediatric dentists are well versed in these situations. Let the dentist and their staff guide you
  7. Avoid Bribery - You don't want to promise your child a lollipop for not fussing or crying. That may make your child think something bad will happen if they should be worried about fussing or crying. Not to mention it sends the wrong message after the dentist talks about healthy teeth and avoiding sweets. Encouragement for good behavior is a better way to go
  8. Emphasize The Importance Of Good Oral Hygiene - Teach your child that dentist visits are a necessity, not a choice, and that the dentist will take care of their teeth so they stay strong and healthy

In addition to the above, make sure you find the right pediatric dentist for your child. At Adelberg and Montalvan we are well prepared for a child's first dental visit. For more information, check us out on the web or our Facebook page. We hope to see you soon!

DIY Father's Day Gifts to Make with Your Kids!

Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics
Father's Day is quickly approaching! Need some last minute gift ideas? Check out the below for some easy DIY gifts you and your kids can make together:

Adelberg & Montalvan

Father's Day Chalk Photo:
Find a good spot on your driveway and go to work with some chalk. Have your kids pose, step back and snap some photos! (Crafty Texas Girls)
Business Card Holder:
You'll need an altoids tin, low VOC spray paint, school glue, scissors, a pencil, and recycled paper. Trace the tin on recycled paper and cut it out. Then spray your tin with paint and set to dry. Write "Dad" in the center of the paper in bubble letters and cut it out. Finally, mix your school glue with a bit of water and use the mixture to glue the paper to the top of the altoids tin. (Crafting a Green World)
Colorful Coaster Set:
You'll need plain bathroom tiles from hardware store, Mod Podge, felt pads, and tissue paper. Paint a layer of Mod Podge over the tile, then decorate with cut up pieces of tissue paper, apply another layer of Mod Podge over top to seal the coasters. Allow coasters to dry completely and flip the coaster over and add a felt pad to each corner. (Inner Child Fun)
Felt Koozie:
You'll need pieces of felt, hot glue/ hot glue gun, scissors, a pen, and a ruler. Wrap your main piece of felt around a cup Dad typically uses to determine length/size of the koozie and mark felt accordingly. Leave some extra room so you can glue together. Cut felt to the appropriate size. Draw and cut out letters and art of your choice from other pieces of felt and hot glue them to the middle of your main piece. Wrap the felt around the cup again and mark where the felt overlaps. After that,  just hot glue the ends that overlap together. (Crafting a Green World)
