Travel Tips for Oral Health

With the last month of summer fun underway, it’s time to grab the kids, pack up the car, and head out to enjoy your final family vacation of summer 2016.

But just because you’re away from home doesn’t mean your daily routines should be put on hold until your return. Make sure your kids keep up with their oral health even while on the go with these tips!
  1. Book your check up with us! Before heading out, make sure to bring the family in for a thorough exam. This way, we can spot any problems early so you can have peace of mind while away.
  2. Keep our contact information handy. Many dental emergencies can be resolved over the phone. If you’re worried and feel like you need to speak to one of our doctors give us a call – we’ll also be able to let you know if this is something that can wait until you get home or if it’s something more serious.
  3. Forgot your toothbrush? For a quick fix we suggest vigorously rinsing your mouth with water to dislodge any debris from teeth. You can also add some toothpaste to a clean washcloth or your finger until you find a drugstore.
  4. Make sure you transport your toothbrush properly. A plastic bag is great to keep it separated from other items in your medicine bag. Once you get to your destination, set your toothbrush out to air dry.
  5. Get yourself back on track. If you weren't practicing the best oral health while away, don’t stress. Just be sure to get yourself back to brushing for two minutes twice daily and flossing regularly once home.

Travel Tooth Care Tips

Have some upcoming vacations planned this summer? Whether it’s a trip to Disney or a trip out of town to Grandma’s, any getaway is bound to take you out of your normal routine. While a break from the daily stresses is always welcomed, there’s one thing you shouldn’t take a vacation from - your oral hygiene.

Make sure you and your family are prepared this season with these travel tooth care tips:
  • Pack wisely - Make sure your tooth brush is secured in a travel container that provides enough air circulation. It’s also important to keep that container clean - before, during, and after your trip!
  • Let your brush dry - Wet brushes can grow and spread bacteria. When you are done brushing, instead of placing it back in its case be sure to stand it upright so the water can drain off the bristles.
  • Stock up on travel sized products - Travel sized versions of mouth wash, floss, toothpaste, and toothbrushes are all available and perfect for keeping in your purse or carry on for on the go use.
  • Watch your diet - It’s easy to indulge when on vacation, just try not to go overboard! Watch the amount of sweets and remember to brush and rinse after consumption.
  • Schedule a cleaning prior to your trip - Make sure everything is A-OK prior to your vacation by paying us a visit. This way we can make sure there’s nothing that will cause tiny teeth to have any big problems.
For any questions, concerns, or emergencies - we’re here for you and your child. Please feel free to contact us at any of our 3 locations. Call (516) 798-1111 or visit our website to schedule an appointment!

#TravelThursday - Tooth Care While Traveling

With your child’s spring break around the corner, you may have some travel plans secured (hopefully to a warmer, less rainy location). As such, we wanted to make sure you were prepared with some tooth care tips while traveling:

Pack properly - Make sure all toothbrushes are covered with a travel container large enough to provide air circulation and holes for drainage and ventilation. Be sure to clean the case thoroughly before and after the trip to rid any dirt or bacteria.

Purchase travel sized items - If you are only bringing a carry on, remember to comply with TSA rules. Travel sized toothpaste (3oz) can easily be stashed in your carry on bags. It may also be a good idea to bring a travel sized toothbrush in your purse for on the go cleaning. Remember, if staying at a hotel,

Bring some sugar free xylitol chewing gum
- When traveling, it’s easy to fall out of normal dental care routines. With nature’s secret weapon in gum form on hand, you can still take preventative oral health measures. Xylitol aids in preventing bacteria from sticking to the teeth as well as keeping saliva at a more neutral pH level. Chewing this gum will help to stimulate saliva and keep teeth clean and healthy.

Avoid dental emergencies - If possible, schedule your routine checkup with us prior to leaving. To prepare for emergencies while away, pack a “Dental Emergency Kit” including mouth guards for sporting activities, pain relievers, orthodontic wax for those with braces, cotton/gauze, and floss.

For any questions, concerns, or emergencies - we’re here for you and your child. Please feel free to contact us at any of our 3 locations.

#TuesdayTips - for Healthy Holiday Smiles While Traveling

Holiday break is upon us and whether you are heading out of town to celebrate the holidays or off to a warmer destination for a winter vacation, here are some simple tooth travel tips to help keep your child’s smile intact!

Schedule your dental visits! It’s better to plan ahead and get all needed dental visits in before the flurry of excitement truly begins. With the holidays comes time off from school, visiting family or taking trips to ring in the New Year. Don’t wait for a dental emergency to happen to bring your child to the dentist, give us a call and schedule an appointment today!

Pack a travel dental kit! This is a fun for children to take their oral hygiene with them on the go! Pack travel sized toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, and a toothbrush. Consider some disposable toothbrushes for in-between brushing on the go.

Protect your brush! Extra handling, coming in and out of luggage, and hotel bathrooms can provide bacteria the extra opportunity to find its way onto the bristles, and in turn - the mouth. Be sure to choose an anti-bacterial cover to keep the brush safe and clean from any dirt or germs it could come in contact with.
