How to Spring Clean Your Smile

Spring has sprung! Have you started your spring cleaning yet? In addition to household chores, now is the perfect time to spring clean your dental routine as well!
Not sure where to begin? See below to get started:
Rid the junk food: By now you should know that the food you consume plays a vital role in oral health. In honor of National Nutrition Month, work to limit the amount of junk food in your home and instead replace with healthy fruits and vegetables for snacking.

Throw out your old toothbrush: Has your toothbrush seen better days? It may be due time for a replacement. In general, toothbrushes should be replaced every three months unless they show signs of wear earlier. So inspect your family’s toothbrushes - any with frayed bristles should be disposed of and replaced for the spring season.

Remind everyone to brush and floss daily: Brushing and flossing are two of the most basic weapons in the fight against tooth decay. Reinforce dental habits in your home by reminding everyone to brush for two minutes, twice daily, and floss regularly.

Schedule an appointment with us: The best way to help spring clean your dental routine? Scheduling a visit with us! Regular exams and cleanings are important for all ages. They give us the chance to monitor your child’s oral health and be proactive in catching problems early.

Spring Cleaning - Oral Health Edition

Spring cleaning - a time for decluttering the home, donating old clothes, and taking care of the seasonal outdoor chores. It’s also the perfect time to improve your dental health routine!
In honor of tomorrow being the first day of Spring (minus the winter weather on the forecast), we wanted to help you brush up on some ways to not only spring clean your mouth, but your family’s as well:
  • Out with the old in with the new - When was the last time your household replaced their toothbrushes? If you’re struggling to remember it’s most certainly time. For a general rule of thumb, replace your toothbrush every 3 months.
  • Brush and floss regularly - Perhaps a New Year’s resolution was to stick to brushing and flossing regularly, and perhaps now you’ve slipped out of these good habits. Re-establish these habits now that the new season has arrived! Try keeping a travel toothbrush on hand (purse or car) to remind yourself to brush after a healthy lunch or a late breakfast. Add flossing to your nightly routine since during sleep, less saliva is produced to naturally clean the mouth, thus leaving bacteria to roam free and do some damage.
  • Schedule an appointment with us - Regular exams and cleanings are vital for all ages. We specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and caring environment and three Long Island locations. Head into the Spring in Summer with a healthy, bright smile and schedule your appointment today!

Spring Clean Your Dental Routine

While spring cleaning typically involves cleaning up the cobwebs around the house after a long winter, the phrase has come to represent a variety of ways to reorganize different aspects of your life. So why not take this opportunity for spring renewal to invest in your family's dental health!

See below for some simple ways to get you started:

Toothbrush check - when was the last time you or other family members replaced their toothbrush? The ADA recommends that toothbrushes get replaced approximately every 3 months or sooner if the bristles become frayed.

Overhaul your diet - March is National Nutrition Month and the start of spring, what better time to make some changes to your diet! Making adjustments to the foods you eat and beverages you consume can help put you back on track to excellent oral health. Not sure what to add to your grocery list? See our recent blog for suggestions!

Brush and floss regularly - While we know you are already doing this, we want to be sure the whole household is brushing for two minutes, twice a day. Flossing is equally important but often neglected. So in honor of spring cleaning your dental routine - commit to flossing daily!

Schedule an appointment for a good spring teeth cleaning - regular exams and cleanings are important for all ages. They give the dentist a good idea of what your child’s habits are and thus the dentist can suggest changes needed to improve his or her oral health. Give us a call to schedule an appointment to make sure your child is on the right path to a lifelong healthy and happy smile!
