Tooth Tips Through the Years

Keeping teeth and gums healthy is an important lifetime commitment – and no, it’s not just for having a nice smile in photos. While that’s part of it, maintaining your oral health through the years helps prevent toothaches, discomforts and more serious illnesses (from tooth decay or gum disease to cardiovascular disease).

Fortunately, there are many simple ways to keep teeth health at any age. See below for some important tooth tips to follow through the years!

Baby - Toddler:

  • Just because baby teeth fall out doesn’t mean they don’t need to be cared for! Baby teeth are very important for your child’s health and development — like helping them chew or speak! That’s why it’s important to clean your baby’s mouth and gums even if no teeth are visible. Once teeth come in and through age three, brush with no more than a smear of toothpaste (grain of rice).
  • Avoid putting baby to bed with anything but water. Baby bottle tooth decay occurs when teeth are exposed to sugar for long periods of time (drinks like milk and juice).
  • Establish a dental home early! This helps eliminate fear of the dentist and allows us to monitor their development and spot any dental abnormalities. This visit should occur at the sight of their first tooth or by your child’s first birthday!
  • Avoid sharing utensils with your child and while it may be tempting to clean off a pacifier that fell with your mouth, this should be avoided as well. Why? Because cavity causing bacteria can be passed through saliva!

Children - Teens:

  • For children ages three to six, you should supervise brushing and only give them a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Start teaching them not to swallow the paste and to brush for two full minutes!
  • Once your child has two teeth that touch, it’s time to begin flossing daily. Getting them into this habit early will help them continue this routine later in life.
  • Don’t skip on fluoride treatment! Fluoride is a natural substance that helps strengthen teeth and prevent decay! We include this with every pediatric dental treatment.
  • Make sure a mouthguard is part of your athlete’s uniform! A custom fit mouthguard designed by Adelberg Montalvan is the most comfortable fitting, providing optimum protection and improved performance.

All Ages:

  • Keep your nutrition in check! The first signs of poor nutrition often show up in your oral health. Choose smile saving snacks often, no matter the age.
  • It’s important to maintain dental routines – from keeping up with brushing and flossing to making sure you visit the dentist every six months. Being on top of dental health should become second nature, like showering or changing clothes!

Here’s to a lifetime of healthy smiles! For more tooth tips, explore our blog or give us a call!

To continue keeping your family’s smiles bright, schedule your next appointment with us today! We specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and welcoming environment, in three different Long Island locations.

Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental Featured in NYMetro Parents

It’s no surprise that kids (and adults) fear the dentist. With all the equipment and procedures, not to mention references in pop culture, it can certainly be a little intimidating. But we don’t want you or your children to feel afraid!

That’s why we teamed up with NYMetro Parents in honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month to help demystify the dentist – so you know what you can expect during your visit with us.

Routine dental visits (every six months) help us gauge your child’s overall dental health. During this time, your child’s teeth will be cleaned, we’ll review proper brushing and flossing techniques, discuss oral hygiene and apply a topical fluoride treatment to protect against cavities. This is also the time for us to spot potential problems early, so that your child will need minimal interventions later in life. As Dr. Marc states in the article, “Parents should get [their kids] to the dentist early so we can help treat and coach them at an early age.”

X-rays are sometimes needed to spot things the eye can’t see. These X-rays take images of your child’s jaw and tooth structure and can show us if there are any cavities or abnormalities. They also help us track teeth progression. At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, we take radiation dosages very seriously and even have digital X-ray machines. These machines allow for over a 50 percent reduction of radiation exposure and produce instant, high-quality images for our viewing. Learn more about our holistic dentistry services here!

Fillings are needed when a cavity is found, to fill the hole and block bacteria. Our tooth-colored composite fillings can be done in one visit! Once the decay is removed, the tooth is filled with the composite material which immediately hardens.

For further insight into laser treatment and braces, be sure to check out the full article, below!

Adelberg Montalvan specializes in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and welcoming environment, in three different Long Island locations. We understand that kids may fear the unknown, which is why we understand that what we do impacts the child's life forever – so we try to make things fun!

Tips for Avoiding Toothaches: National Toothache Day

Happy National Toothache Day! Wait, we’re supposed to celebrate a toothache? Au contraire – what we’re actually doing is celebrating good oral hygiene in order to prevent mouth woes!

Here’s how you and your children can care for your teeth, and hopefully keep toothaches to a minimum:

Be sure to brush for two minutes, twice daily. Tooth decay is the most common cause of a toothache! Work to prevent this by brushing for the proper length of time twice a day. Bonus for using fluoride toothpaste to help strengthen tooth enamel! Check out our fluoride FAQs blog for more information!

Floss between teeth regularly. Did you know that sometimes, toothaches are simply cause from having food caught between teeth! Ouch!

Always wear a mouth guard during sports. Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth may be another reason you suffer from a toothache. Mouth guards are key for keeping smiles intact as well as preventing more serious facial injuries and concussions during sports. If you're in need of a mouth guard for your athlete, stop by our mouth guard center

Limit the consumption of sugar. Cavities are one of the biggest toothache culprits. By cutting down on sugar, you’ll be cutting down on the mouth monsters’ chances of harming the teeth.

Visit us! Regular dental visits help us catch problems early, when they’re more treatable. We can also spot things ahead of time and give you a warning – for example, looks like there is a tooth poking through – as a heads up, your child may feel uncomfortable during this transition.

Even if you follow the above tips, toothaches may still occur. If you or your child experiences mouth pain, try inspecting the area to see if there are any visible cues. Ibuprofen may be an immediate help as would a cold compress, however if you or your child experiences serious pain (fever or fatigue) please contact your physician immediately.

If your child is experiencing a toothache or has any other oral pain or discomfort, contact the professionals Adelberg Montalvan. We specialize in caring for children’s teeth in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Give us a call or visit our website to schedule an appointment at any of our three locations.

Snow Day Activities for Kids

The first part of your day was likely spent sleeping in and having a (tooth-friendly) family breakfast. But as the snow continues to come down, boredom may strike. But before you get to that point, check out some of the below snow day activities! We think you’ll find enough ideas to keep your kids entertained before they head back to school again.

Indoor Bowling! As long as you have the space, challenge your child to a game of indoor bowling! Using empty plastic water bottles or containers as your pins (may need to add a little bit of water to the bottles to help anchor them down) – set 10 up in a triangle at the end of your hall (or room), then find a ball, aim, and bowl!

Get a head start on your Valentine’s Day cards or decor! Break out the pink, red, and white construction paper – time to get started on your Valentine’s! Perhaps you’ve already printed out these tooth-cute ones, in that case your children can work on creating decorations for your home! This Valentine’s Day Tree Paper Craft would make a stunning addition to your fridge while this Red Solo Cup Character can hang out on a side table or mantel!

Make your own silly putty! Pour some Elmer’s Glue-All Multi-Purpose Glue and your favorite food coloring into a bowl and mix well. Then add some Sta-Flo Concentrated Liquid Starch into the mixture, stir then let sit for five minutes. Then take the putty out of the bowl and place it on a paper towel, begin to knead with your hands and enjoy!

Make some ice balloons! All you need is water, balloons, food coloring, and cold weather. Put a drop of food coloring in each balloon and carefully fill them with water (discard any that leak!). Tie a knot and place them outside in the snow. Let them freeze (you can also put them in your freezer) and then carefully cut the knot to peel back the balloon. This process is best done outside to avoid a mess. Feel free to scatter them around your home in the snow for a pop of color!

Build a Snowman! When all indoor activities fail, it’s time to head outside and build your first snowman of 2017. Make sure everyone is bundled properly as to avoid catching a cold!

We hope you enjoy your snow day – remember to tag us in your snow day photos!

Treat Your Kids to a Tooth-Friendly Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day is just a week away — do you have plans to celebrate with your little ones? Here's how you can treat your kids to a tooth-friendly Valentine's Day this year!
Tell your kids they’re floss-some! — How? Easy! The ADA has provided some printable oral health related Valentine’s Day cards for your convenience. Trust us, they’re tooth-cute!

Show some lunchtime love. — Using a stainless steel, heart shaped cookie cutter, you can quickly turn their favorite sandwich into a friendly reminder that you care! You can even use smaller cutters for cheese slices or use a knife to easily cut some strawberries into hearts!

Choose tooth-friendly alternatives. — Another easy way to show your little one how sweet you think they are(without sugar)! Give them a new stuffed animal or coloring book with your Valentine’s Day card this year. You can even find some Valentine’s Day themed clothes or accessories — like this heart printed scarf for girls or this Star Wars themed, “Ewok my world” shirt for boys.

Limit the bad sweets. — Caramels, taffy and other sticky sweets can easily adhere to your kids’ teeth. Help prevent mouth monsters this Valentine’s Day, let your kids have the better of the candy varieties. Dark chocolate for example contains antioxidants that are beneficial to your mouth and teeth. Just remember to have them brush for two minutes after consumption!
