Celebrate National Fresh Breath Day!

It’s National Fresh Breath Day! Annually observed on August 6th, Fresh Breath Day was created to highlight the importance of oral hygiene and to stress that brushing for two minutes twice daily, flossing, tongue scraping, and keeping up with regular dental visits all help in keeping bad breath at bay.
Here are three ways to celebrate National Fresh Breath Day

1. Make sure you are brushing and flossing correctly.
It’s not enough to just brush and floss regularly if you aren’t doing it right! Make sure everyone in your family brushes for two full minutes at least twice a day for a thorough cleaning. And don’t forget the floss! Flossing is crucial for removing debris stuck between teeth (which can cause bad breath) - an area a toothbrush may not reach.

2. Drink more water.
Not only does water help remove particles between teeth and but it helps boost saliva production. Drinking water helps moisten the mouth, kicking bad breath to the curb!

3. Be mindful of stinky foods.
Seems obvious, but stinky foods like onions, garlic, and even coffee, all have smells that linger long after consumption. Be mindful of what you decide to snack on today!

Have questions about improving bad breath? Give one of our offices a call or stop by our Massapequa location this weekend. We’ll be taking part in the Massapequa Park Street Fair and will be available to answer any questions and provide a tour of our office!

Tips for Handling a Dental Emergency

It’s that time - you’re enjoying your family's summer vacation when suddenly a problem strikes! Your child slipped and hurt their tooth - now what do you do? While we hope you don’t have to experience any dental emergencies while away, we did want to provide some tips on how to handle some tricky situations:
What to do if your child has a toothache:
A toothache may not scream emergency but, it does hurt your little one which in turn hurts you! First, try to find the source of the pain - swelling, redness, or any discolorations. Rinse the area with a warm salt-water solution.

What to do if your child cuts their cheek, tongue, or lip:
Ice the injured area to help control any swelling. Apply pressure with a cloth if there is any bleeding. If the bleeding persists, contact us or visit the emergency room.

What to do if your child chips a tooth:
To reduce the chance for infection - contact us immediately. Rinse with water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If you find any tooth fragments, rinse in cool water and place in a cup with milk, saliva, or water.

What to do if your child knocks out a tooth:
With baby teeth, treatment is not necessary. For a permanent tooth, time is a crucial factor! If you can, try placing the tooth back in the socket without touching the root. If this is not possible, place the tooth in milk, saliva, or water and take it to the dentist right away.

What to do if you experience a dental emergency while abroad:
In case of an emergency away from home, contact us or use the Find A Dentist Tool by the American Dental Association (ADA). This tool will help you locate an ADA dentist who can help you wherever you are.

No matter what dental emergency you may experience, remember Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric is here for you and your child. For aid with the above or general questions and concerns please feel free to contact us at any of our 3 locations or visit us online to schedule an appointment!

Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental July Reviews

Why should you choose (and recommend to your friends) Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental for all of your child’s dental care needs?

Our testimonials speak for themselves!

“I would tell everyone I know with children to come to this practice. They have outstanding staff and the treatment we received, as a family, not just the patient, was far better than any medical or dental office I have ever visited.” - Cayden Z.

“The office is warm and inviting. Dr. Adam was great. My daughter was scared at first having a male dentist. After Dr Adam explained everything truthfully and carefully in kid terms she turned to me and said, "I like this place." She ended up having an emergency root canal which can be traumatizing to an adult! As a parent I felt informed, comfortable and assured that it would be okay. It is uncommon to say we had an amazing experience getting a root canal! The dentist, office environment, and staff are hard to come by. I highly recommend Adelberg Montalvan. We are very thankful.” - Gabriella F.

“Welcoming and fun waiting room. Front office staff were friendly and attentive. Hygienist and Dr. Bennett were super friendly and very patient!” - Thomas H.

“Dr. Janine was amazing with Emerson. She had two teeth pulled and had so much anxiety and Dr. Janine calmed her down talked her through it and was so kind and patient with her. She kept reassuring her and that was key . She was so good that she didn't even realize the teeth were out and she was done! Lol that's why we keep coming back, the care you give is priceless.” - Emerson C.

“We have been patients for about a year, we made the switch because I have one child with a disability and we had not found success at any other dentist. Each visit is even better than the last! Our dental hygienist, Nicole, is beyond awesome. She has been able to clean my child's teeth (completely) and get xrays! She has my child's (and my) complete trust.” - Peter T.

“Dr. Marc and his staff are wonderful. They have gone above and beyond to help my son who has a great fear of dentists. They have helped my son when no one else has. I highly recommend theme for anybody with children who have a dentist phobia. The whole office is courteous and kind. I have had nothing but good experiences with them!” - Luke C.

Tips for Kicking Thumb Sucking to the Curb

Thumb sucking is not an unusual habit for babies, toddlers, and young children. In fact, according to the American Dental Association, children can begin their thumb sucking habits as early as in the womb --Woah!

And, children usually stop sucking their thumb on their own between ages 2 and 4. --Whew!
Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental | Thumb Sucking

However, if continued, this habit can lead to many consequences including serious dental problems. Listed below are steps you can take to help your child kick thumb sucking to the curb!

Identify the Trigger
Children who suck their thumbs often do so when they’re feeling stressed, upset, hungry, or bored. Once you are able to identify which situations set off your child’s habit you can quickly intervene and slowly eliminate the triggers.

Positive Reward System
During reading time, did your child keep their thumb out of their mouth? How about when they were playing at the park? Or running an errand with you? Don’t let the small things go unnoticed - a small reward can help the good habit become long-lasting!

Show and Tell
(Open wide and say “cheeeese”) Compare your mouth with your child’s and point out the pretty smile they can get if they stop sucking their thumb. You can also show them pictures of their favorite cartoon or disney princess’ smiles.

Thumb Time Break
When you see your child is about to put their thumb in their mouth, distract them. Give them an indoor/outdoor activity or a stuffed animal to hold - anything to keep their hands busy!

Time to Talk
One of the best things you can do is speak to your child about why it is important to stop thumb sucking. Remind them you are there to help every step of the way!

Have any of these tips helped your child break their thumb sucking habits? Connect with us on Facebook and Twitter and let us know!

Facts about Baby Teeth

Even though they will eventually fall out, baby teeth still play an important role in your child's overall health and development. That said, it's important to make sure you take good care of them!

While you're at it, here are some facts about baby teeth you can really sink your teeth into:

  • No two people have the same set of teeth. They are as unique as your fingerprint!
  • Bones are NOT as strong as teeth. It’s true, tooth enamel - the outer most layer of the tooth - is the strongest substance in the human body.
  • Unlike bones or other parts of the body - teeth cannot heal themselves. That’s why dental fillings and other work is necessary to protect them from further damage.
  • Although you can’t seem them yet - they are there! Baby teeth, or milk teeth, start forming in the womb and start to come through when the child is between 6-12 months old.
  • A baby’s bottom incisors (bottom front teeth) are usually the first to come through at around 5 to 7 months old.
  • Baby teeth should be brushed as soon as they appear - use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste to brush your child’s teeth.
  • Baby teeth are prone to decay just like adult or permanent teeth - that’s why we advise giving your child water in a bottle at bedtime. Exposure to any form of sugar (including milk!) while asleep can add to Early Childhood Decay.
  • You can actually catch a cavity! Cavity-causing bacteria can be passed from person to person - either by sharing drinks, kissing a loved one, or when a parent tastes food to ensure it’s not too hot for the child. This bacteria can also be transmitted if a parent “cleans” off a pacifier by sucking on it before giving it back to their little one.
  • In prehistoric times, kids likely did not suffer with tooth decay. Why? The American Dental Association says this is because sugar was not a regular part of their diet!

Celebrate World Chocolate Day!

A piece of chocolate a day keeps the dentist away - er, not really. But chocolate actually does provide some benefits for oral health!

The cocoa bean in chocolate has tannins, polyphenols, and flavonoids - all of which are powerful antioxidants that help prevent infections and prevent bacteria from sticking to teeth. The darker the chocolate, the least processed and close to the cocoa bean it actually is.

So in honor of World Chocolate Day, treat yourself to some dark chocolate and read up on some other fun chocolate facts:

Chocolate is the food of the gods. Literally! The scientific name for chocolate is Theobroma cacao - literally meaning “food of the gods.”

Chocolate was once a form of currency. The Maya and Aztecs actually used cocoa beans as a barter currency to exchange for food and clothes!

Chocolate was a soldiers’ best friend. Chocolate was so valued in America during the Revolutionary War, that it was included in soldiers’ rations and used in lieu of wages!

White chocolate is a derivative of chocolate. Some argue white chocolate is not actually chocolate. Why? Because its doesn’t contain cocoa solids - the main component of chocolate.

Milton Hershey’s first love was caramel. It took 17 years for Milton Hersey to even become interested in chocolate making! Starting in the caramel business, it wasn’t until Hersey attended the 1893 World’s Fair that he decide to enter the world of chocolate production. Hershey Chocolate immediately became so successful, he sold his caramel company for $1 million to devote himself to chocolate.

If you do plan to indulge today, remember - moderation is key! And don't forget to brush and floss afterwards!
