With the heat advisory still in effect, what's the one thing everyone's trying to do? Cool down, of course. So why not enjoy a tasty frozen treat to chill your body temperature.
July is National Ice Cream month (as deemed by President Ronald Regan) and National Ice Cream Day is celebrated the 3rd Sunday of July - which makes it THIS weekend! Granted you can enjoy ice cream any day of the year, how about do something extra special to celebrate; make some homemade ice cream with your children!
Not sure how to make it? Thanks to Spoonful.com we've included all you need to prep your homemade ice cream:
PREP TIME: 5 minutes
SERVINGS: 1
WHAT YOU NEED:
- Ice cubes (enough to fill each gallon-size bag about half full)
- 1 cup of half and half
- 1/2 cup salt (The bigger the granules, the better. Kosher or rock salt works best, but table salt is fine.)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 pint-size ziplock bag
- 1 gallon-size ziplock bag
- Also include your favorite toppings such as chocolate chips, cereal pieces, or fresh fruit.
- Combine the sugar, half and half, and vanilla extract in the pint-size bag and seal it tightly.
- Place the salt and ice in the gallon-size bag, then place the sealed smaller bag inside as well. Seal the larger bag. Now shake the bags until the mixture hardens (about 5 minutes). Feel the small bag to determine when it's done.
- Take the smaller bag out of the larger one, add mix-ins, and eat the ice cream right out of the bag. Easy cleanup too!
